Absentee voting underway for 2010 primary election

Absentee voting has started in Union County for the 2010 primary election.

The primary election is set for Feb. 2.

Union County Clerk Bobby Toler Jr. said grace registration and voting started Wednesday, Jan. 6, and continues through Tuesday, Jan. 26, in the county clerk's office.

Early voting is scheduled to start Monday, Jan. 11, and will continue through Thursday, Jan. 28.

The county clerk's office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

At the local level, the 2010 primary election will feature races for countywide offices and three tax-related proposals.

Voters will be asked to decide sales tax proposals on a countywide basis and in the City of Anna. A property tax referendum will be on the ballot in the Lick Creek School District.

Union County voters also will have a say in nominating candidates to represent the Democrat and Republican parties in the November 2010 general election.

The county clerk noted that voters will be able to cast ballots in the sales tax votes and school referendum without having to declare a party affiliation, which is part of voting in a primary election in Illinois.

However, if a voter chooses to vote only in those elections, he or she will not be able to cast a ballot for a candidate in the Democrat and Republican primary elections.

In the Democrat primary, incumbent county clerk Bobby Toler Jr., incumbent county treasurer Bobby G. Myers, incumbent sheriff David Livesay and incumbent county commissioner John Garner are seeking reelection.

Garner is being challenged in the primary by Gary C. Dahmer.

Two Republicans are on the ballot for county commissioner: Billy M. Williams and Dale Russell.
