Accident early Sunday claims life of area woman

A single-vehicle traffic accident early Sunday morning in Union County claimed the life of a Dongola woman.

The woman was standing in the roadway when she was struck by a car, Union County Sheriff David Livesay said.

The victim was identified as Carole Brown, 65, of Dongola.

The accident happened at about 12:50 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, at 6615 U.S. Highway 51S, just north of Dongola.

Mrs. Brown was struck by a passenger car which was traveling south along U.S. Highway 51S. The car was driven by a 20-year-old man from Chicago Heights.

Gladys Sharp Richardson

Gladys Sharp Richardson, 90, of Vienna, died Friday, Dec. 25, 2009 at 1:15 p.m. at the home of her daughter in Anna.

She was born on Sept. 29, 1919, near Vienna, the daughter of Chesley Sharp and Pearl Shoemaker Sharp.

She married Robbie Richardson in 1939 at Cape Girardeau. He preceded her in death on March 24, 2009.

Media not doing job

To the editor,

The media is not doing their job, protecting people’s rights.

The media knows of violations made by some people but do not inform the public of such.

I was at the courthouse last week with a sign that said Justice with a big question mark.

Do you think the media covered this legal action? No.

A number of people who stopped and talked to me said our justice is not fair to all people and something should be done.

Union County entrepreneurs receive start-up grant funds

 Union County entre-preneurs James R. Earles of Alto Pass and Jeff Wallin of Cobden have won seed capital start-up grants from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the Delta Regional Authority.

Earles is owner and operator of Pharaoh Motorsports, a business that converts gas vehicles to electric.

Wallin is an artist/blacksmith.

Crash occurs on Route 3

No injuries were reported as the result of a traffic accident which happened early Tuesday morning, Dec. 15, on Illinois Route 3 in McClure.

Illinois State Police at Ullin reported that the accident happened at 6:01 a.m. Tuesday on Route 3, approximately one-quarter of a mile south of Duncanville Street in McClure.

The accident involved a tractor trailer. The vehicle ran off the roadway to the right and overturned.

The driver, a Missouri man, was cited for improper lane usage.

Breakfast with Santa set

The Cobden High School boy’s basketball team is planning to host a breakfast with Santa on Saturday morning, Dec. 12.

The breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in the cafeteria at Cobden Elementary School.

Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The menu will feature pancakes, sausages and beverages.

The cost of the breakfast is $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Children under 2 will be free with the purchase of a ticket.

'Christmas in Cobden'

To the editor,

On behalf of the Cobden Community and Business Association, as well as the Village of Cobden, I want to say a huge “Thank You!” to everyone who contributed to the overwhelming success of the village’s first “Christmas in Cobden” event! 

So many people from so many aspects of the village worked on putting this event together over the past several months. 

Their time and hard work obviously paid off, for the village was truly filled with the genuine "spirit of Christmas" throughout the entire day! 

Santa Cop program a success

A successful Santa Cop program was held during the holiday season.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Union County 911 office sponsor Santa Cop, which was held for the third year.

A Santa Cop celebration was held Wednesday, Dec. 16, at the Sunshine Inn community center in Anna.

Sheriff’s office and 911 employees shopped for and wrapped more than 200 Christmas gifts.

The gifts were presented to 41 children from the Cobden, Dongola, Lick Creek and Shawnee school districts.

Dongola 67, Ezra Christian 39

Tyler Eddleman scored 12 points to lead Dongola to a 67-39 win over visiting Ezra Christian School in high school boys’ basketball action Friday, Dec. 4.

Austin Hinkle and Tanner Latham added 10 points apiece for the Demons.

Darin Gibson and Chris Cohin had 8 points apiece, Jordan Eads 6, Brock Patterson 4 and Tyler Thompson, Clay Harris, Brad Ralls and John Sims 2 apiece.

The Demons led 22-7 after one quarter and 38-19 at the half.
