Lick Creek girls finish third at state track meet

The Lick Creek School girls’ track team earned a third place finish at the recent Class S State Track Meet in Salem.

With the 3rd place finish, Lick Creek completed a sweep in which they placed in all four sports they competed in at the Class S level.

The softball team started the year with a 4th place finish, followed by basketball taking 3rd place and volleyball team losing in the state championship and taking 2nd place.

Wildcats upset Harrisburg to win regional baseball title

With a 5-4 upset victory over number one seed Harrisburg, the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats won a Class 2A regional baseball championship Saturday, May 23.

The third-seeded Wildcats defeated Harrisburg in the title game at the Carterville regional.

A-J rallied from a 4-3 deficit to score the big win and advance to sectional play.

Cody Wheaton pitched a complete game victory for the Wildcats. He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits.

Leading the team in hitting was Jordan Adams, who was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs.

Cobden Village Board has busy agenda at May 4 regular meeting

The Cobden Village Board of Trustees covered a wide range of business at a regular meeting held last week.

The meeting was Monday night, May 4, at Cobden Village Hall.

Highlights from minutes of the meeting follow:

Wes Lyerla vacated the seat of village president and gave his keys to newly elected village president Molly Beckley. Beckley’s oath of office was administered at an April 20 village board meeting.

The oath of office was administered to village clerk Karen M. Winzenburger by village president Beckley.

Deloris Rider Mowell

 Dongola, died at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at City Care Center in Anna.

She was born on July 4, 1929, in Union County, the daughter of Ralph Owen and Vesta Fisher Rider.

She married Charles O. Peterson. He preceded her in death on July 18, 1972. On July 3, 1982, she married Amos Mowell. He preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 2003.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dongola. She had worked at Florsheim Shoe Factory.

Wolf Lake school reunion planned

Former Wolf Lake school students, teachers and friends are invited to attend a reunion which is planned Saturday, May 23.

The reunion will be at the First Baptist Church at 409 Morgan St. in Anna.

Dinner will be at 1 p.m. Local residents who plan to attend the reunion are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert to share.


        Red Cross presents honors

        The American Red Cross has recognized a Union County school, church and resident for their ongoing support of the community blood program.

        The Red Cross honored Anna-Jonesboro Community High School, the First Baptist Church in Anna and Anna community blood drive coordinator Sara Hensch.

        Blood drives take place at A-JCHS and the First Baptist Church throughout the year.

        Velma E. Dickerson

        Velma E. Dickerson, 62, of Jonesboro, and formerly of Edwardsville, died at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at her home.

        Mrs. Dickerson was born in Alexander County on Jan. 14, 1947, the daughter of Marion Stevens and Alberta Johnson Stevens.

        Mrs. Dickerson was a member of the First Baptist Church in Edwardsville. She was a retired cook for Edwardsville School District No. 7. She was a resident of Edwardsville for 43 years before moving to Jonesboro.

        Cobden, A-J girls advance in softball Shawnee, A-J boys fall in sectional finals

        Two of the four Union County teams competing in sectional play advanced Saturday.

        Defending state champion Cobden downed Elverado 2-1 in an 11-inning pitching duel to win the Class 1A sectional tournament at Trico. Cobden advances to super-sectional play at Carbondale to meet Cumberland at 4:30 Monday at SIUC's Charlotte West Stadium. Cobden's season record is 29-4.
