SIUC sustains $5 million in storm damage

Preliminary estimates of the destruction and damage caused by the May 8 storm which struck the region total $5 million on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus.

The university is largely insured against the building property losses. University officials are in the early stages of working with commercial insurance carriers and adjusters.

Of the $5 million estimate, $1 million is the anticipated cost of debris cleanup.

Velma E. Dickerson

Velma E. Dickerson, 62, of Jonesboro, and formerly of Edwardsville, died at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at her home.

Mrs. Dickerson was born in Alexander County on Jan. 14, 1947, the daughter of Marion Stevens and Alberta Johnson Stevens.

Mrs. Dickerson was a member of the First Baptist Church in Edwardsville. She was a retired cook for Edwardsville School District No. 7. She was a resident of Edwardsville for 43 years before moving to Jonesboro.

Cobden, A-J girls advance in softball Shawnee, A-J boys fall in sectional finals

Two of the four Union County teams competing in sectional play advanced Saturday.

Defending state champion Cobden downed Elverado 2-1 in an 11-inning pitching duel to win the Class 1A sectional tournament at Trico. Cobden advances to super-sectional play at Carbondale to meet Cumberland at 4:30 Monday at SIUC's Charlotte West Stadium. Cobden's season record is 29-4.

Cobden ends regular season with 25-4 record

Taylor Orsburn tossed a three-hitter to lead host Cobden to a 4-1 win over Hamilton County in the final regular season high school softball game Monday, May 17.

Orsburn had 11 strikeouts  and 2 walks.

Taylor Wilkins was 1-for-2 with a double and 2 RBIs. DaCota Knop  was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

Ana Duda was 1-for-2. Jenna Lehr was 1-for-3 with a double. Kayla Quertermous had an RBI.

Cobden improved to 25-4 with the win.

Anna students receive honors at recent district music contest

The Anna Junior High School music department competed in the recent Illinois Grade School Music Association’s district solo and ensemble contest.

The contest was May 2 at Centralia Junior High School in Centralia.

Anna Junior High School received four first superior ratings, seven Division 1 ratings and one Division 2 rating.

The following Anna students received first superior ratings:

Female voice solo: Olivia Gordon, Janna Harner, Amber Skelton.

Treble ensemble: Timbre Craig, Katie Whiteside, Jenna Collier, Amanda Halter.

William C. ‘Bill’ McDonald

Bill McDonald, 86, of Cobden, died at 3 a.m. Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1922, in Cobden, the son of Hosea and Clara Anderson McDonald.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He worked many years as a truck driver for the Trojan Powder Plant.

He married Betty Broadway. He was a life member of the Anna VFW.

Rita Sue Tally

Rita Sue Tally, 75, of Cape Girardeau, and formerly of Mounds, died at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at the Fountainbleau Lodge in Cape Girardeau.

Mrs. Tally was born on May 24, 1933, in Cairo, the daughter of Robert Parker and Jeno Etheridge Parker.

Mrs. Tally was a 23 year professional investor with the Illinois Department of Regulations, retiring in 1991.
