Jonesboro boys third in conference tournament

Jonesboro defeated Cobden to win third place in the Southern Illini Conference junior high school boys’ basketball tournament at Anna Saturday, Dec. 12.

Following are game summaries:

Jonesboro 33, Cobden 28: Tyler Vaughn scored 11 points to lead Jonesboro to the third place win.

Dakota Easterly added 8 points, Damian Reed 5, Trey Pender, Zane DeWitt and Derek Harvell 4 apiece and Garrett Nadeau 1.

 Century 48, Jonesboro 38: Vaughn scored 11 points to lead Jonesboro in the second-round loss in the tournament Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Future of courthouse will be key issue in 2010 Referendum will be on February primary election ballot

As 2009 came to an end, the Union County Board of Commissioners continued to focus on an issue which will be a focal point in 2010.

The future of the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro was on the agenda when the commissioners met Monday afternoon, Dec. 21. The meeting was at the courthouse.

The commissioners will be pushing hard in coming weeks to gain support for passage of a sales tax referendum which will be on the ballot in the February 2010 Union County primary election.

Cobden scores at buzzer for tournament victory

Alex Sweitzer scored at the buzzer to lift Cobden to a 64-63 win over Wayne City for third place at the Christopher High School boys' basketball Turkey Tournament Saturday, Nov. 28.

Sweitzer scored on a put-back of Robby Lehr’s shot.

Lehr led Cobden’s effort with 29 points. Steve Draper added 12 points, Bo Gearhart 9, Allan Brumleve 8 and Sweitzer 6.

The Appleknockers led 17-16 after one quarter butfell behind 31-26 at the half.

Holiday programs set at area schools

Union County area public schools plan to present holiday programs.

Here's a look at the schedule:

Lick Creek School: 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14.

Cobden Junior-Senior High School: 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13.

Cobden Elementary School: 12:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18.

Lincoln and Davie schools, Anna: Tuesday, Dec. 15. The programs will be at Anna Junior High School. A kindergarten program is planned at 6 p.m. A Lincoln School program (grades 1 and 2) is planned at 6:30 p.m. A Davie School program (grades 3 and 4) is planned at 7:30 p.m.

Century 58, Shawnee 54

Shawnee let a first quarter lead slip away in a 58-54 loss to visiting Century in South Egyptian Conference high school boys’ basketball Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The Redskins were ahead 12-11 after one quarter. The Centurions made a run to pull ahead 29-26 at the half. Century led 48-42 going into the final period.

Tyler Spurlock scored 18 points to lead the Redskins. Tyler Davis added 17 points. Tyler Glidewell had 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Tyler Brant and Kyle Griggs had 2 points apiece.

County Board against removal of land from tax rolls

The Union County Board of Commissioners has taken a formal stand against the removal of more land from local tax rolls.

The issue was on the agenda at this week's regular county board meeting. The meeting was Monday afternoon at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

County commissioner Randy Lambdin previously had shared concerns about the land issue which had  been voiced to him by a local resident.

Shawnee registration underway

Registration for upcoming spring semester classes at Shawnee Community College is scheduled to continue through Thursday, Jan. 14.

Just a couple of weeks into the registration period, some classes are already full so students are encouraged by college officials to enroll early to ensure the classes they want are available.

Wednesday, Jan. 13, is the first day of instruction for the spring semester.

Danny Glenn Erwin

Danny Glenn Erwin, 65, of Effingham, and formerly of Anna, died at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Danville.

Mr. Erwin was born on Sept. 11, 1944, in Herrin, the son of Cecil M. and Mabel Gaddis Erwin.

He married Pam Duschl on June 22, 1968.

Mr. Erwin had worked for G.C. Murphy for 20 years. He later worked as a self-employed carpenter until his retirement.
