Veterans Day parade slated

The 2009 Veterans Day parade is planned Wednesday, Nov. 11, in Anna.

The parade is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of Anna.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The parade route will be through downtown Anna.


        Home Town Award

        Congratulations to all of those who were involved in last year's celebration of the 150th anniversary of the historic Lincoln-Douglas debate in Jonesboro.

        Many, many hours of volunteer service went into preparing for the 2008 celebration.

        That hard work paid off last week when Union County received a Governor's Home Town Award. The award was presented in recognition of the successful Lincoln-Douglas celebration.

        Shawnee boys basketball team boasts nine seniors

        The Shawnee High School boys basketball team will have a senior laden squad for the 2009-2010 campaign.

        Nine seniors are on the Redskins’ roster this season.

        “We’ve got a total of 19 kids out and we’ve got a lot of kids pushing other kids,” first-year head coach Brett Pinnon said. “We have a deeper rotation than we’ve had in a while.”

        Three full-time and a part-time senior starter returns from last year’s 13-15 squad.

        Wildcats win state playoff opener 41-35 at Carterville 'Cats travel to Pana next

        Anna-Jonesboro jumped to a 21-0 lead and then outpaced Carterville score-by-score in a flurry of offense to post a 41-35 victory in first round action in the Illinois class 3A football playoffs at Carterville Saturday.

        The two teams accounted for six touchdowns in the final period, including four in little more than the last three minutes of the game.

        The Wildcats advance to the second round this weekend, traveling to Pana.

        Pana, a number 12 seed, upended fifth-seeded Pittsfield 12-8 Saturday.

        Mr. and Mrs. Robert Goins married 60 years on Dec. 3

        Rev. and Mrs. Robert Goins of Anna will be celebrating 60 years of marriage. The couple were married on Dec. 3, 1949, in Mound City.

        They have five children, Deborah and Wes Sadler, Rebecca and Mike Gibson, Tony and Teresa Goins, Mark and Denise Goins of Anna and Tom and Sheila Goins of Port Allen, La.

        They have 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

        The couple will be honored with a reception on Sunday evening, Nov. 29, at the United Pentecost Church fellowship hall in Dongola following the evening service.

        Lick Creek School names honor students

        Lick Creek School announces first quarter honor students:

        5th grade, high honors: Garret Barringer, Elle Basler, Morgan Dillow, Brianna Dirden, Colton Dunaway, Alivia Miller, Madison Root, Dagan Shoot.

        5th grade honors: Isaac Coleson, Ethan Friebel, Dakota Hileman, Ellie Miller.

        6th grade, high honors: Hunter Garver, Logan Mattingly, Hannah Reach, Nicole Crawford, Megan Smiley.

        6th grade, honors: Zach Parr, Sierra Miller, Kaleigh Pressler.

        7th grade, high honors: Balyie Denny, Hannah Merriman.

        Suspect pleads not guilty

        The suspect in the beatings of two women at Anna church in September has pleaded not guilty to the charges he is facing.

        Willis Bates, 45, of Anna, is charged in the connection with a violent attack which happened Sept. 28 at the First Baptist Church in Anna. He faces multiple felony charges.

        Bates entered the not guilty plea during an appearance Tuesday in Union County Circuit Court in Jonesboro.

        A pretrial hearing the case is set for 9 a.m. Dec. 8 in circuit court.

        Bates remains in custody at the Tri-County Detention Center in Anna.

        Veterans tribute planned

        Union County residents can learn more about the story of a World War II hero at a program planned for this weekend.

        The Union County Historical Society plans to present a Veterans' Day tribute Saturday, Nov. 14.

        The program, titled "Tail Gunner!", is set for 1 p.m. at the VFW's Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 near Anna. The event is free and open to the public.

        The post is located off old U.S. Route 51 just north of Anna.

        Veterans appreciation service set at Anna church

        A Union County church plans to continue a tradition of honoring veterans at an upcoming program.

        The Anna Nazarene Church plans to host a Veterans Appreciation Day service Sunday, Nov. 8.

        The service will be at 10:30 a.m. The church is located at old U.S. Highway 51 and Kirk Street in Anna.

        Guest speaker is scheduled to be Dr. Kenneth Edward Saum.

        Saum is a lieutenant colonel and assistant professor of clinical surgery in the division of cardiothoracic surgery with the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps.
