Dongola boys squad young, inexperienced

First-year Dongola High School boys’ basketball head coach Russ Marsh will attempt to rebuild for the 2009-2010 season.

“We’re going to be young and very inexperienced,” Marsh said. “We’ve got to build the program and we’ll be starting at the bottom. Hopefully, we’ll get the kids started.”

The Demons finished 6-20 last season and there are no returning starters in the wings.

A part-time starter from last year who is returning is senior Chris Cohen, a 6-1 point guard.

Only one senior back for A-J wrestling team

The Anna-Jonesboro High School wrestling team will sport a young squad for the 2009-2010 season.

“We’re going to  be young,” A-J wrestling coach Rick Bittle said. “But the kids have worked real hard in the off-season.”

The Wildcats return only one senior from last year in Alex Gonzales, who will compete in the 285-pound bracket.

Sophomore Mike Dillman, who had a 14-14 varsity record last season will be at 215 pounds.

At 189 pounds, junior Taylor Fitzgerald and freshman Jordan Lemke will vie for the spot.

Co-ed soccer team finishes fall season with 12-1-1 record

The Union County 7th and 8th grade co-ed soccer team finished the fall season with a 12-1-1 record.

The squad won the Carbondale tournament and finished second in the Perryville, Mo., tournament.

The soccer team allowed 9 goals while scoring 81 for the season.

Goalkeeping duties were shared by Noah Fuller, Trey Pender, Natty Hepburn and Garrett Nadeau.

Forwards were ChuCho Godinez, Christian Godinez, Martin Summara and Fuller. Midfielders were Hepburn, J.J. Ford, Sammy Brimm and Estaban Bartolo.

'Lunch with the Best' set at college

The second in a series of area business luncheons is planned Thursday, Nov. 12, at Shawnee Community College near Ullin.

The "Lunch with the Best" is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.

Attendance is open to the general public, but reservations are required. To make a reservation, contact Reppert Publications at 833-2158.

The boards of directors at area chambers of commerces will be honored at the luncheon.

Each organization will be given an opportunity to speak briefly about its activities and accomplishments.

Raelen J. Miller Bayless

Raelen J. Miller Bayless, 29, of Springfield, and formerly of Villa Ridge, died at 5:13 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at her home in Springfield.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1980, in Cape Girardeau, the daughter of Ray D. Miller and Carolyn Jackson Miller.

She was a correction officer with the Lincoln Correction Center in Lincoln. She was a 1998 graduate of Meridian High School in Mounds, where she was very active in softball, basketball and was in an acting class in Chicago.

Cobden girls win third straight title

The Cobden High School  girl’s basketball team defeated Shawnee 48-29 to win the Lady Bobcat Tournament at Meridian for the third consecutive year Saturday, Nov. 21.

“We played pretty well,” first-year Cobden head coach Travis Foster said. “I was pretty pleased with the effort.”

The Appleknockers built a 12-2 first quarter lead and held on for the win.

“We had a great first quarter,” Foster said.

Cobden led 20-10 at the half and 35-16 going into the final period.

Ana Duda led the way with 17 points for the Appleknockers.

15 arrested Tuesday on multiple charges

Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds and Union County Sheriff David E. Livesay announced Tuesday that federal, state and local law enforcement officers operating under the newly introduced Operation FASTEN Initiative served arrest warrants on 15 individuals early this morning in connection with an ongoing investigation of burglaries and stolen firearms.
