Courthouse tax issue to be on ballot

Voters will help to decide if Union County needs a new courthouse.

The Union County Board of Commissioners last week approved a resolution which will place a sales tax proposition before the voters.

The proposal will be on the Feb. 2, 2010, primary election ballot.

Voters will be asked to approve a 1 percent increase in the county's share of the local sales tax.

If the measure were to be approved, it would mean that consumers would pay an additional $1 in sales tax for every $100 "of tangible personal property bought at retail."

Cobden School names honor roll students

Cobden Junior-Senior High School announces first quarter honor roll students:

Lincoln program scheduled

Area residents are invited to learn more about Abraham Lincoln and Southern Illinois at a program which is planned Saturday, Nov. 14, in Anna.

The program is set for 1 p.m. at Stinson Memorial Library at 409 S. Main St.

"A House Divided: Abraham Lincoln and Southern Illinois" will be presented by Dr. Samuel P. Wheeler.

Wheeler is a lecturer at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

His research, writing and speaking interests include the life of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War era.

John Ronald “Ron” Cain

John Ronald “Ron” Cain, 72, of Tuscola, died at 1:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Burial was Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Ebenezer Hall Cemetery in Union County.

He was born on Aug. 4, 1937, in Tuscola, the son of Pinckney Moses and Barbara Gertrude Hummel Cain.

He married Carleen Pitts on July 16, 1955, in Arcola.

Herrin man sentenced

A Southern Illinois man has been sentenced to serve three and a half years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on a charge of aggravated driving under the influence.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced the sentencing of Frank D. Hopkins, 49, of Herrin on the aggravated DUI charge. The charge is a Class 2 felony.

Edmonds said Hopkins was arrested on the evening of Oct. 13 by Illinois State Police on Interstate 57.

Filing ends Monday for primary election

Monday, Nov. 2, was the final day for candidates to file nominating petitions for the 2010 primary election in Union County.

Candidates began filing their nominating petitions for next year's primary election Monday, Oct. 26.

The primary election is set for Feb. 2, 2010. Four countywide offices will be on the ballot.

Petitions were filed at the Union County clerk's office in Jonesboro.

Candidates for county commissioner, county clerk, county sheriff and county treasurer will be elected in the primary.

A-J’s Elizabeth Bell advances to IHSA state swimming finals

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School senior Elizabeth Bell was heavily favored to win both of her events at the Nov. 14 IHSA Springfield sectional and to advance to the Nov. 20-21 state finals hosted by New Trier High School.

Bell met and exceeded her expectations.

In the 50 yards freestyle, Bell led from the blocks, hitting the electronic touch pad in 23.48. The personal best time dropped .45 of a second from her previous best and erased the Eisenhower Pool record of 23.71 set by Sarah Randag which had endured for 18 years.

Anna Council approves sales tax vote

Anna voters will be asked to approve a sales tax increase when they go to the polls in the 2010 primary election.

The Anna City Council this week unanimously approved a resolution to place the issue on the Feb. 2, 2010, primary election ballot.

The resolution was approved by a 5-0 vote at a regular meeting of the city council held Tuesday evening. The meeting was at Anna City Hall. The resolution was drafted by Anna city attorney Wes Wilkins.

Voters will be asked to approve a .25 of a percent sales tax increase.

Breakfast with Santa planned in Cobden

The Cobden High School boy's basketball team is planning to host a breakfast with Santa on Saturday morning, Dec. 12.

The breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in the cafeteria at Cobden Elementary School.

Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The menu will feature pancakes, sausages and beverages.

The cost of the breakfast is $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Children under 2 will be free with the purchase of a ticket.
