Rose Mary Gunn Jones

Rose Mary Gunn Jones, 80, of Mounds, died at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.

She was born on June 24, 1929, the daughter of Zon and Mary Turner Vick.

She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Villa Ridge, where she served as a Sunday School secretary. She was treasurer of the Shiloh Cemetery Association in Villa Ridge. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star chapter in Olive Branch, and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.

Lick Creek School District referendum focus of meeting

The Lick Creek School District No. 16 Board of Education has called a special meeting for Tuesday, Jan. 5. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the school's gymnasium.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss a referendum which has been placed on the ballot for the Feb. 2, 2010, primary election.

The school district's superintendent and board of education members plan to present several items of information regarding the referendum.

Cobden Shootout Saturday

The Cobden High School Shootout is scheduled for this Saturday.

The Shootout will feature girls’ and boys’ basketball games.

11 a.m.: Cairo vs. Caruthersville, Mo. (boys)

12:30 p.m.: Cobden vs. Webber Township (boys)

2 p.m.: Cobden vs. Goreville (junior varsity boys)

3:30 p.m.: Cobden  vs. A-J (junior varsity girls)

5 p.m.: Cobden vs. A-J (girls)

6:30 p.m.: Waterloo Gibault vs. Century (boys)

8 p.m.: A-J vs. Meridian (boys)

Cobden defeats A-J 47-31

Ana Duda netted 17 points, including four 3-pointers, to power Cobden to a 47-31 win over Anna-Jonesboro Saturday, Dec. 12.

The game was played as part of the Cobden Shootout tournament, which featured boys’ and girls’ basketball games.

Taylor Orsburn and Katelyn Wiggs added 8 points apiece for the Appleknockers. Kayla Quertermous had 6 points and Jordyn Grey, Mara Hackethal, Mariah Piper and Bekah Russell 2 apiece.

Cobden girls improve to 10-0 with victory

Taylor Orsburn scored 15 points to boost Cobden to a 41-37 win over Carterville in opening-round action of the Herrin holiday high school girls’ basketball Hoops tournament Saturday, Dec. 26.

Ana Duda added 13 points for the Appleknockers. Kayla Quertermous chipped in 6 points, Rebekah Russell 3 and Katelyn Wiggs 2.

The Appleknockers trailed at every quarter break until coming back in the final quarter for the win.

The Lady Lions led 17-13 after one quarter and 24-18 at the half. Carterville led 29-25 going into the final period.

Keith Lynn Gibbs

Keith Lynn Gibbs, 51, of Carbondale, formerly of Du Quoin, passed away at 3:35 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2009 at his residence.

Mr. Gibbs had worked for the Kroger Company for 35 years.

He had been store manager at the Kroger store in West Frankfort before coming to the Kroger store in Anna.

Mr. Gibbs served as manager of the Kroger store in Anna for five years. During that time, he oversaw a remodeling of the store.
