Make a resolution for 2010

The holiday season has come to an end. A few hours are still left in 2009.

And the 2010 election season has begun in earnest.

Voters could begin casting absentee ballots this week for the February 2010 primary election.

As Election Day draws ever closer, ever so quickly, we encourage Union County voters to make sure they are a part of the upcoming exercise in democracy.

The 2010 primary is going to be important at the local level for several reasons.

A-J hosts wrestling invitational Dec.19

Anna-Jonesboro recorded two first place finishes in its junior varsity high school wrestling match Saturday, Dec. 19.

Andrew Adams and Forrest Palis had first-place finishes for the Wildcats.

Adams, wrestling in the 112- pound class, decisioned Carmi’s Matt Brown, 13-3; pinned Mount Vernon’s Tom Hippen in 3:09; and decisioned Carmi’s Cody Stanton, 25-8.

Palis, 125 pounds, pinned Mount Vernon’s Jeremiah Keel in 4:28 and decisioned Carmi’s Miles Glavin, 18-4.

Second place efforts were recorded by Austin Noble and Brandon Crosser.

Low of 13 recorded last week

A low reading of 13 degrees was recorded during the past week in the Union County area.

The high for the week was 54 degrees.

Precipitation for the period measured .16 of an inch of rain Dec. 9, .19 of an inch Dec. 13 and a trace Dec. 14.

Damaging winds were recorded Dec. 9.

Art works by Walter, Jahn featured

 A dual exhibit by Adolph W. Walter III and his daughter, Barbara Walter Jahn, will be featured in Anna Arts Center’s Gallery Room through Dec. 30.

The arts center is located in the former Anna city hall/police/fire station building along West Davie Street in Anna.

Adolph’s paintings are primarily oils and watercolor.

A-J Women’s Club meets at Bethany Village in Anna

The Anna-Jonesboro Women’s Club had its November meeting in the conference room at Bethany Village in Anna. 

The club “showered” the local food pantry with packaged food items. 

Club members present  were Betty Coffman,Goldie Petraitis, Millie Hankla, Debbie Sadler, Ann Michels, Judy Smith, Clara Nell Butler, Jane Bauer, Maxine Williamson, Lillian Milam, Betty Dodd and Barbara Bauer.

Bethany Village director Wally King also was present.

A project of the Federated Women’s Clubs is domestic violence education and prevention. 

Joe A. Post

Joe A. Post, 50, of Jonesboro, died at 11:34 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

He was born on March 23, 1959, in Jonesville, Mich., the son of Jack and Mariam Post.

He married Betty Spurlock on Nov. 16, 2002, in Wolf Lake.

He was a member of Trinity Tabernacle Church in Jonesboro and was employed by Union County Hospital in Anna.

'A Night in Bethlehem' set at Cobden church

A Union County church is planning to host a special Christmas season event which is open to the community.

"A Night in Bethlehem" is planned Sunday and Monday, Dec. 20-21, at First Baptist Church in Cobden.

The church is located at 200 S. Walker St.

"A Night in Bethlehem" will be presented from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Tours through Bethlehem are scheduled to start every  10 minutes.
