Cobden goes 1-2 in tournament play

The Cobden High School boys’ basketball team finished 1-2 in the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament.

Following are game summaries:

Goreville 72, Cobden 55: The Blackcats built an early lead on their way to the win to eliminate Cobden Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Goreville led 21-15 after one quarter and took over in the second quarter to build a 40-24 halftime lead. The Blackcats led 57-38 going into the final period.

Memorial pavers project underway at veterans home in Anna

The Illinois Veterans’ Home in Anna is partnering with Brick Markers USA for a memorial paver project.

Local residents are invited to purchase bricks that will be used to build a walkway through a sensory garden at the veterans home, which is located at 792 N. Main St.

The memorial paver project is ongoing. Orders continue to be accepted, but can only be processed in lots of 100 bricks.

The first phase of the project ran through early December 2009.

Plans call for the first pavers to be set in early spring of this year.

Clyde C. Meadows

Clyde C. Meadows, 101, of Dutch Ridge, died at 7:07 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1908, in Orchardville, the son of Tilden and Mary Waller Meadows.

He married Cleo Eliza Outlan on Aug. 26, 1933, in Jonesboro. She preceded him in death on April 21, 1982.

Frances M. Warden

Frances M. Warden, 77, of Mound City, died at 1:10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

She was born on Dec. 27, 1932, in Mayfield, Ky., the daughter of John Davis and Mary Bradley Hudson Davis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jack Davis; and by two sisters, Dorsie Mae Keesee and Helen Fitzgerald.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post No. 2649 in Cairo. She was a retired cook with 21 years of service with Meridian School District No. 101 in Mounds.

Lick Creek School announces honor roll

Lick Creek School announces honor roll students for the most recent grading period:

5th grade, high honors: Elle Basler, Morgan Dillow, Ethan Friebel, Colton Lannom, Madison Root, Dagan Shoot.

5th grade, honors: Isaac Coleson, Brianna Dirden, Alivia Miller, Ellie Miller, Shad Turner.

6th grade, high honors: Hannah Reach, Hunter Garver, Nicole Crawford, Megan Smiley, Logan Mattingly.

6th grade, honors: Kaleigh Pressler, Zachary Parr.

7th grade, high honors: Balyie Denny, Hannah Merriman.

Healthy Woman program slated Jan. 25 in Anna

The Union County Hospital Healthy Woman Program plans to host a January event with Dr. Michael Kaye from the Union County Podiatry Clinic serving as the guest speaker. 

The free event is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, in the second-floor conference room at Union County Hospital in Anna. The hospital is located at 517 N. Main St.

The program will serve as a meet-and-greet opportunity with Dr. Kaye to learn more about the services he is offering.

Preregistration is encouraged, since seating is limited. 

Lick Creek girls improve to 15-4 with recent wins

The Lick Creek School junior high girls’ basketball team won three games in recent action.

Following are game summaries:

Lick Creek 35, Vienna 23: Courtney Root had 15 points, 5 rebounds and a steal to lead host Lick Creek Monday, Jan. 11.

Erica Friebel had 8 points, 8 rebounds, an assist and a steal for Lick Creek. J.J. Ford had 8 points, 10 rebounds, an assist and steal.

Balyie Denny had 4 points, 3 assists, a rebound and 2 steals. Katy King had 2 points and a steal. Ashley Donaho had 2 assists.

Shawnee defeats Cobden in SEC tourney action

Kyle Griggs scored 21 points to lead Shawnee to a 48-46 win over Cobden for fifth place in the South Egyptian Conference high school boys’ basketball tournament at Century Saturday, Jan. 23.

Ty McMahan added 12 points for the Redskins. Kyle Spurlock had 6 points, Tyler Davis 4, Andrew Livesay 3 and Tyler Brant 2.

Robby Lehr had 17 points to lead the Appleknockers. Steve Draper added 14 points, Alex Sweitzer 11 and Bo Gearhart 4.

Cobden led 9-6 after one quarter and 23-16 at the half. The Appleknockers led 32-30 going into the final quarter.

Tax issues on ballot

Three tax issues will be on the ballot in the Tuesday, Feb. 2, primary election ballot in Union County.

Sales tax votes are set in Union County and in the City of Anna. A property tax issue is on the ballot in Lick Creek School District 16.

County Proposition

The following countywide proposition is on the ballot:

"To pay for public facility purposes, being a new county courthouse, shall the County of Union be authorized to impose an increase on its share of the local sales tax by one percent (1%)?"

Illinois State Scholars recognized

Students from three Union County high schools have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission, ISAC, has recognized 19,345 high school students from 752 different schools from across the state as 2010 Illinois State Scholars.
