Be sure to vote

Even though it seems like we just celebrated the Christmas holiday season, an election is just around the corner.

No, the holiday season and an election aren't really connected, it just seems like one is following rather closely after the other.

Union County voters have an opportunity to go to the polls on Tuesday, Feb. 2, to cast ballots in a primary election.

Yes, there will be opportunities next Tuesday to select candidates who will face off in the November general election. Make your choices, and may the best person for the job win.

Cobden 50, Shawnee 45

Robby Lehr scored 24 points to lead Cobden to a 50-45 win  over host Shawnee in South Egyptian Conference high school boys’ basketball Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Bo Gearhart added 12 points for the Appleknockers. Steve Draper had 7 points, Alex Sweitzer 5 and Allan Brumleve 2.

Kyle Griggs had 11 points to lead the Redskins. Tyler Davis added 10 points, Ty McMahan 7, Andrew Livesay 6, Kyle Spurlock, Tyler Brant and Greg Smith 3 apiece and Kyle Stevens 2.

The Redskins led 16-13 after one quarter and held a 21-18 halftime lead.

Dennis DeRossett named as executive director of Illinois Press Association

The Illinois Press Association Board of Directors today announced its selection for its executive director following a nationwide search that lasted more than six months.

Dennis DeRossett of Alto Pass, publisher of the Southern Illinoisan newspaper in Carbondale, was chosen for the position.

He succeeds David L. Bennett, who retired last summer after 24 years of service.

“I have known Dennis for almost 20 years,” said Steve Raymond, 2010 president of the IPA and publisher of the Effingham Daily News.

Fatal accident occurs Jan. 20 on Route 3

A Cape Girardeau man sustained fatal injuries in a two-vehicle traffic accident which happened Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 20, on Illinois Route 3 near the Union-Alexander county line.

Illinois State Police at Ullin said the accident happened at about 3:18 p.m. Jan. 20. The scene of the accident was about a quarter of a mile south of the county line.

State police said that Jonathan L. Chamberlain, 28, of Cape Girardeau was fatally injured in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Transit district shares updates on Cobden, Old 51 shuttles

Shawnee Mass Transit District/SMART is announcing improved shuttle service for Cobden.

The district also has announced an update on the Old 51 shuttle.

Cobden Service

On Feb. 3, SMART plans to increase the number of pick up locations and stops for the shuttle.

The transit district stated that adding more pick up locations will make the service more accessible to the residents of Cobden.

A passenger on the shuttle can go to Anna with stops anywhere in the city limits for a round trip fare of $5.

A-JCHS FBLA students receive honors at event

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School students participated in a recent FBLA Southern Area Conference competition.

 A-JCHS students competed against 18 other schools.

A-JCHS students who received honors at the competition include: 

Dylan Barker, first place, computer problem solving.

Jordan Adams, first place, business law.

Mason Hayward, second place, business math.

Jeni Keller, second place, business procedures.

Jessi Stone, third place, person finance.

Caleb Johnson, third place, Word Processing I.

Cobden outscores Shawnee

Taylor Orsburn scored 15 points to power Cobden to a 45-34 win over host Shawnee in South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball Thursday, Jan. 14.

Ana Duda and Katelyn Wiggs added 11 points apiece for the Appleknockers. Kayla Quertermous had 4 points, Mara Hackethal 3 and Rebekah Russell 1.

Kaylee Boston had 15 points to lead the Lady Reds. Jessie Reynolds added 9 points, Taylor Ellis and Jonnie Ellet 3 apiece and Jordan Johnson 1.

Cobden led 9-7 after one quarter and 17-14 at the half.

E. Elaine Smith

E. Elaine Smith, 76, of Wichita, Kan., died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009.

She was born on March 7, 1933, in Jonesboro, the daughter of the Rev. Marion and Hazel Hileman.

She married Herbert L. Smith on Jan. 26, 1952, in Freeburg.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Herbert L. Smith; sons Lee, Steve and Tom; daughters Lola Townsen and Patricia Newberry; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Evelyn Spencer and Deborah Schronschack; and a grandson, Joshua Newberry.

A-J wrestling squad records 22 wins at Quincy tournament

Brandon Cerney finished in fifth place to lead the Anna-Jonesboro High School wrestling team's efforts at the Quincy tournament last weekend.

"We did well and we only took one senior up there," A-J wrestling head coach Rick Bittle said.

Bittle said wrestling at the Quincy tournament was "a good experience" for his squad and helps the A-J wrestlers to prepare for postseason competition. Bittle said he was "very pleased" with his squad's efforts.

Reenactors guests at January meeting of A-J Women’s Club

A-J Women’s Club member Deb Rossberg and Jay Rossberg wore period costumes and shared a bit of history with the A-J Women’s Club at the club’s Jan. 4 meeting at Shawnee Community College’s extension center in Anna. 

The Rossbergs showed pictures of encampments in which they participate, and told about life in the camps and how the reenactors attempt to relive the life and history of the1754 to 1763 era. 

The next A-J Women’s Club meeting is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Feb. at Shawnee Community College’s extension center in Anna.
