A-J’s Heath earns title at West Frankfort wrestling invitational

Daniel Heath won the championship to lead Anna-Jonesboro’s efforts at the Redbird Invitational high school wrestling competition at West Frankfort Saturday, Jan. 9.

Heath, wrestling at 112 pounds, advanced with a pin over Mt. Vernon, Indiana’s, Josh Hester in :46 and decisioned Evansville’s William Hargus 15-3.

Heath won the championship with a decision over Harrisburg’s Phillip York 11-7.

Taylor Fitzgerald, competing at 189 pounds, finished in second place.

Tours of county courthouse scheduled

Community members will have an opportunity to tour the aging Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro prior to a vote which could generate funding for a new facility.

Plans for tours of the courthouse were announced at this week’s regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners. The meeting, the first of 2010 for the commissioners, was at the courthouse.

Tours are scheduled on two upcoming Mondays: Jan. 11 and Jan. 25.

The Jan. 11 tours are planned from 9 a.m. to noon. Tours on Jan. 25 are scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Cobden scores win over Dongola

Alysha Bottje scored 11  points to lead Cobden to a 52-12 win over visiting Dongola in South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Kayla Quertermous added 10 points for the Appleknockers.

Bekah Russell had 9  points, Taylor Orsburn 6, Katelyn Wiggs and Katie Mowell had 4 apiece and Ana Duda, Jordyn Grey, Mara Hackethal and Mariah Piper 2 each.

Emily Terbrak had 8 points to  lead the Lady Demons. Haley Fuller and Chelsea Moore had 2 apiece.

Cobden led 16-2 after one quarter and 30-6 at the half.

Kayla Quertermous scored 17 points and pulled down 4 rebounds to lead host Cobden to 50-27 win over Anna-Jonesboro in nonconference high school girls’ basketball Saturday, Jan. 9.

Ana Duda added 16 points and 3 rebounds for the Appleknockers.

Taylor Orsburn had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Mara Hackethal had 2 points and 8 rebounds. Mariah Piper had 2 points.

Jesse Stone had 10 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Lady Wildcats.
