Ruth I. Henard

Ruth I. Henard, 85, a resident of Jonesboro, and a native of Johnson County, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 7, 2010, at 1:15 a.m. at Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna.

Ruth was born Nov. 16, 1925, in Johnson County. She was the daughter of Lloyd Daniel Henard and Orpha May (Bost) Henard.

Survivors include two brothers, Bill and Freeda Henard of Paducah, Ky., and Dorris M. and Betty Henard of Canton; a sister, Beulah M. and Gene Spraggs of Pekin; and nieces and nephews.

Troy William Morgan

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst"><strong style=""><span style="">           </span> Mr. Troy William Morgan, age 76 of Alto Pass, died at 4:11 P.M. Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born December 6, 1934 in Gorham, the daughter of Edward A. and Alta Grace Morgan.</strong></p>

Lady 'Cats to compete in Benton tournament

Anna-Jonesboro competes in the Benton Invitational in high school girls’ basketball Dec. 27-29.

Fairfield, Trico, Flora, Carterville, A-J and the host Lady Rangerettes are in the tourney.

The Lady Wildcats begin tournament play against Hamilton County at 11 a.m. and Flora at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27.

On Tuesday, Dec. 28, A-J plays Carterville at 4 p.m.

On Wednesday, Dec. 29, the semifinals and championship rounds will be played.

Lick Creek School Board petitions available

Nominating petition forms are available for the April 5, 2011, Lick Creek School District 16 Board of  Education election.

Five seats on the seven-member school board will be filled in the election.

Candidates can file for either a four-year term or a two-year term.

Forms can be picked up in the district office at Lick Creek School between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any business day.

Candidates can begin filing nominating petitions no earlier than 7:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, at the school. Filing ends Monday, Dec. 20.

Dongola 41, Meridian 15

Emily Terbrak scored 16 points and pulled down 8 rebounds to lead Dongola to a 41-15 win over visiting Meridian in high school girls’ basketball action Tuesday, Nov. 23.

The win avenged a previous loss to Meridian in the Lady Bobcat Classic.

Haley Fuller had 12 points for the Lady Demons. Michaela Penrod added 6 points, Victoria Shirkey 5 and Brittany Hinkle 2.

The Lady Demons led 8-0 after one quarter and 19-5 at the half. Dongola was ahead 23-10 at the end of three periods.

Chance for white Christmas about 15 percent

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?

The National Weather Service, NWS, forecast office in Paducah says there's about a 15 percent chance of a white Christmas happening in the region which includes Union County.

For the record, a white Christmas, as defined by the National Climatic Data Center, is one with an inch or more of snow on the ground at 6 a.m.

The last white Christmas in the region was in 2004, when there were 9 inches of snow on the ground at Paducah. This was the result of a record snowfall on Dec. 22.

Pope County 46, Dongola 44

Dongola’s last quarter come-back bid fell short in a 46-44 loss to Pope County in the Turkey Tournament in high school boys’ basketball at Crab Orchard Saturday, Nov. 27.

The Pirates led 11-6 after one quarter and 21-18 at the half. Pope County led 33-27 going into the final period. The Demons outscored the Pirates 17-13 in the final frame.

Jordan Eads scored 16 points to lead Dongola. Tyler Thompson added 12 points, Darin Gibson 7, Clay Harris 6 and Tyler Eddleman 4.

A-J seeded 3rd at Eldorado tourney

Harrisburg is the top seeded team in the Eldorado Holiday high school  boys’ basketball tournament scheduled Dec. 27-29.

The No. 2 seed is Massac County and A-J, 5-4, was seeded No. 3.

Other teams entered are Herrin, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, Meridian, Hamilton County, Pope County, Fairfield, Gallatin County, Carmi-White County, Galatia, Hardin County, Carrier Mills, West Frankfort and the host Eagles.

A-J begins tournament play against West Frankfort at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27.

Jonesboro girls go 5-1 in recent play

The Jonesboro Junior High School girls’ basketball team posted a 5-1 record in recent action.

Following are game summaries:

Jonesboro 37, Century 29: Madison Calhoun had 10 points and 7 rebounds to lead visiting Jonesboro to the win Tuesday, Dec. 14.

Taylor Smith had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Sammy Brimm added 6 points. Natty Hepburn had 8 assists and 6 steals.

Calhoun scored 10 points, pulled down 9 rebounds and had 3 steals in leading Jonesboro to a 34-20 win over Century in the junior varsity game.

'Carols at Early Candlelight' set Sunday

A "Carols at Early Candlelight" event is planned Sunday afternoon, Dec. 5, in Anna.

The event, hosted by the PAST organization of Union County, will be at 4 p.m. at historic St. Anne's Church at 507 S. Main St.

Guests are asked to park behind Stinson Memorial Library in Anna.

A luminary path will guide visitors to the church.

The evening will include Marion Michel playing carols on a vintage organ for an informal singalong.
