A-J football players earn All-South honors

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School had two football players selected to the Southern Illinois Coaches Association All-South prep football team.

The Wildcats’ Josiah Miller and Taylor Fitzgerald were each named to the squad.

Miller, a 6-foot-3, 350 pound  senior, was selected as an offensive lineman. He also won honors on the Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division all-conference  team as a lineman.

Anna Presbyterian church to present Christmas play

Presentations of a Christmas play are planned Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 11-12, at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Anna.

The play, titled, “Upon This Night,” will be presented at 7 p.m. each day.

The church is at the corner of South and Jefferson streets. There will be no admission charge and no offering taken.

The play features 47 cast members. Members of the cast range in age from 4 through older than 80.

Eleven behind-the-scenes workers will help with the production.

Four face charges in connection with weekend pursuit by authorities

Four Union County men face charges in connection with a weekend police pursuit.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced the charges Monday, Nov. 29.

Patrick W. McLane, 28, of 250 Treece Ln. in rural Anna is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer, both Class 4 felonies.

McLane also is charged with one count of obstructing justice, a Class 4 felony, and one count of resisting a peace officer, a Class A misdemeanor.

Brenda Mae Hutchison

Brenda Mae Hutchison, 59, went home to her Lord and Savior Saturday morning, Nov. 20, 2010, at 9:45 a.m. at Southeast Missouri Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. 

She was born Nov. 25, 1950, in Vienna, Illinois, to Douglas Deryl Wright and Rettie Mae (Lauderdale) Wright.

Brenda is survived by two sons and one daughter, Donald Kelso of Cobden, Ill., David Kelso of Graceville, Fla., and Stephanie Bridges and her fiancé Michael Barfield Jr., of Okawville, Ill. 

Dean Stoodley

Dean Stoodley, 72, of Makanda, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

She was born on March 30, 1938, in Louisville, Ky., to Earl and Martha (Cripps) Kendall.

She married George Bruce “Joe” Stoodley on Dec. 24, 1955. He survives her.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Carbondale and United Methodist Women. Dean was a fantastic cook. She was a loving mother and friend who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Gladys Shelton Stark

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style="">Mrs. Gladys Shelton Stark, age 87, of Anna, formerly of Jonesboro, died at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at her home in Anna. She was born May 15, 1923 in Jonesboro, the daughter of Samuel W. and Maude Hensley Shelton. She married Ivan L. Stark on November 17, 1944 in Jonesboro. He preceded her in death on October 2, 2009.</strong></p>

Filing begins Monday for municipal elections

Filing is underway this week for 2011 Union County municipal elections. Elections are scheduled in April.

Candidates could begin filing their nominating petitions on Monday, Dec. 13.

The filing period continues through Monday, Dec. 20.

In Anna, voters will elect a mayor and four city council members next April.

Jim Cross had filed for mayor as of Monday.

In the race for city council, incumbents David Isom, Ron Stamp, Ricky Tweedy and Martha Ann Webb filed for reelection.

Live nativity set

A live nativity scene is scheduled to be on display starting this Friday at dusk at the Anna-Jonesboro Garden Club Park in east Anna.

The park is located at the intersection of East Vienna Street and old U.S. Route 51.

The public is invited to stop and be a part of the display.

The scene is scheduled to be on display for approximately two hours each weekend night during December.

Gertrude J. Hughey

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style="">Mrs. Gertrude J. Hughey, age 87, of Anna, died at 9:50 a.m. Monday, December 20, 2010 at the Anna Rehab and Nursing Care Center in Anna. She was born July 1, 1923 in Seventy-Six, MO., the daughter of John B. and Catherine J. Meyer Schneier. She married Willard Lester Hughey on October 12, 1946 in Shawneetown, MO. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1991.</strong></p>
