Lady Wildcats fall to Vienna, Marion

Vienna had a big third quarter on its way to a 66-46 win over host Anna-Jonesboro in non-conference high school girls’ basketball Saturday, Dec. 4.

The Lady Eagles led 16-15 after one quarter and 26-24 at the half. Vienna outscored the Lady Wildcats 24-8 in the third quarter to lead 50-32 going into the final period.

“That third quarter killed us,” A-J coach Brian Clark said. “We couldn’t recover.”

Anna Council reviews park improvements

Plans for continued park improvements and concerns about the costs of streetlights were on the agenda at last week's regular meeting of the Anna City Council.

The meeting was Tuesday night, Dec. 21, at Anna City Hall.

Park Projects

City administrator Steve Guined reported that an application has been submitted to the State of Illinois for a $670,000 grant.

If the grant funds are received, they would be used for the construction of a new swimming pool and concession stand at the Anna City Park.

Cobden 51, Shawnee 31

Rob Lehr scored 22 points to lead Cobden to a 51-31 win over host Shawnee in South Egyptian Conference high school boys’ basketball Friday, Dec. 17.

Bo Gearhart scored 8 points, J.C. Chapman 7, Austin Flamm 5, R.G. Millis 4 and Tyler Lewey, Josh Aspen and Sean Stadelbacher 2 apiece.

Ty McMahan scored 17 points to lead the Redskins. Coty Gustafson and Gary Pind added 3 points apiece and Brandon Pind, Gage Shelton, Dylan Smith and Adam Pennington 2 each.  

Cobden girls set to play at Herrin

The Cobden High School girls’ basketball team competes in the Herrin Tournament Dec. 27-30.

Teams competing are Du Quoin, Vienna, Pinckneyville, Murphysboro and the host Lady Tigers.

Cobden opens tourney play at 6:30 p.m. against Du Quoin on Monday, Dec. 27.

Tuesday,  Dec. 28, the Appleknockers play Murphysboro at 7:15 p.m.

Wednesday, Dec. 29, Cobden goes against Pinckneyville at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 30, Cobden plays Herrin at 12:30 p.m. and Vienna at 7:15 p.m.

Oxford joins Crain staff

Betsy Oxford has joined the staff of Crain Funeral Homes. She is the new office administrator at the Anna location.

A graduate of Shawnee High School at Wolf Lake in 1998, she also attended Shawnee Community College.

Most recently, Betsy was a surgical assistant in an oral surgeon’s office.


        Karen Sue Currier Profilet Wallace

        <p style="text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Karen was born August 25, 1944 in Cairo, the daughter of Merrill “Red” Chambers Currier and Janet Lee Hill Currier.<span style=""> </span></span>

        Lick Creek Fall Festival set Saturday

        Lick Creek School plans to host its annual Fall Festival Saturday, Nov. 6, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

        The event is open to all students, parents, family, friends and the community. 

        An evening of games, food, prizes and entertainment is planned.

        The games will include fishing, duck pond, sucker tree, plinko, bingo, bounce house, dunk tank and much more. 

        A cake walk, stuffed animal walk and silent auction are planned. 

        Local artist's works featured in exhibit at University Museum

        The University Museum at Southern Illinois University Carbondale celebrates the “40th Anniversary of the SIUC Glass Program” with a current exhibit highlighting the legacy of glass program founder, Bill Boysen.

        The exhibit is open at present, and a reception was scheduled Saturday evening, Oct. 30.

        The exhibit features works from Boysen and his students, several of whom have become notable artists in their own rights. Boysen lives in rural Cobden.

        Anna mayor says he won't seek reelection in 2011

        Anna Mayor Steve Hartline said this week that he will not seek reelection in 2011.

        Hartline formally announced his decision at this week's regular meeting of the Anna City Council.

        The meeting was Tuesday evening at Anna City Hall.

        Anna voters will elect a mayor and four city council members in April 2011.

        Candidates have begun circulating nominating petitions for the election. The filing period is Dec. 13-20.

Craig, age 87 of Anna, died at 7:26 pm, Monday, November 22, 2010 at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, MO.<span style=""> </span> She was born July 26, 1923 in Stonefort, the daughter of Robert Tull and Dovie (Thomas) Perry.<span style=""> </span> She married Albert “Abe” Craig on June 21, 1941 in Cape Girardeau, MO.</span></strong></p>
