Hospital auxiliary begins scholarship fund drive

The Union County Hospital District Auxiliary is planning to begin its annual scholarship fund drive on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

The auxiliary again will be selling lights and ornaments to help raise funds for the scholarship.

Lights are $1 each. Ornaments are $25 each.

Donations will be featured on a scholarship tree that will be on display at Union County Hospital in Anna.

Lights and ornaments can be designated in honor of, or in memory of, someone in the donor’s family or “a special someone in your life.”

Shirley Roberts

Shirley Roberts, 74, of Murphysboro, died at 12:56 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at the Cobden Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

She was born on April 11, 1936, in Murphysboro, to Audy and Marie (Gilllooly) Volner.

She was a member of the Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro. She worked for many years at the Rehab and Care Center, retiring as a housekeeper.

Charles Thomas (Tommy) Turner

Charles Thomas (Tommy) Turner, 75, of Troy and the Clayton/Antioch community in Tennessee, died at 7:31 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2010, at Reelfoot Lake.

Mr. Turner was born in Cobden, and he was of the Baptist faith.

He attended Lake Road Baptist Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a rigger for U.S. Steel Gary Works for 31 years, and was a ham operator. He was a member of the M.L. McClelland Masonic Lodge No. 357 in Hobart, Ind. He was an avid fisherman.

Goforth earns All-South golf honors

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School’s Brent Goforth has been named to the 2010 Class 1A Coaches Association All-South golf team.

The Wildcat junior shot a two-day total of 170 to finish in 77th place at the state tournament.

Goforth qualified for state by shooting a 75 at  the Carterville regional tournament to finish in sixth place.

He finished the season with scoring averages of 43.7 for nine holes and 84.4 for 18 holes.

Dorothy 'Dot' Burns

Dorothy 'Dot' Burns, 73, of Herrin, departed this life Friday, November 26, 2010 at her residence surrounded by her husband, family and friends.

Dorothy was born February 11, 1937 in Christopher, IL, the daughter of Floyd and Alma (Odum) Watts. Her mother died when Dot was 5 years old. 5 years later, her father married Wanda Moore, who then became a wonderful step-mother.

Dot was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Christopher, where she married her husband, Bill Burns of Valier in 1955.

Veteran performers featured in ‘Voices of Christmas’

In addition to the youthful participants featured last week, 11 veteran performers are in final preparation for this week’s production of “Voices of Christmas.”

The play adapted by Dr. Lynn Steveson will be presented at St. Anne’s Historic Church in Anna on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19-20 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m.

Elizabeth Irene McGuire

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style="">Mrs. Elizabeth Irene McGuire, age 78 of Makanda, died at 9:18 A.M. Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the Jackson County Rehab & Care Center in Murphysboro. She was born August 18, 1932 in Anna, the daughter of Van Leroy and Cecile Williams Hartline. She married Daniel Davie McGuire on May 4, 1957 in Anna. He preceded her in death on May 17, 2007. <span style=""> </span></strong></p>
