Cobden baseball expects to rely on underclassmen

The Cobden High School baseball team will depend on underclassmen for success this spring.

“Once we get by our three seniors and one junior, we’ll have to count on our underclassmen,” Cobden head coach Blayne Smith said. “But I think we’ll be competitive.”

The Appleknockers finished 10-3 in the fall and  return all three senior starters.

The senior trio includes catcher Aaron Cerny, pitcher/shortstop Alex Sweitzer and pitcher/shortstop/center fielder Steve Draper.

The lone junior is shortstop/center fielder Robby Lehr.

Cobden seeking third straight softball title

The Cobden High School softball team has won back- to-back state tournament titles.

Only two players graduated from last season’s 48-5 squad that will try to claim a third straight title.

“We stay healthy and we’ve got a shot to do pretty good,” Cobden head softball coach Nathan Emrick said. “We have basically everybody coming back.”

The solid one-two punch  senior pitching duo of John A. Logan Community College-bound DaCota Knop and Southern Illinois University Carbondale-bound Taylor Orsburn return.

Public defender: Client had nothing to do with death of local man

The public defender who represented a Southern Illinois man in a case connected to the murder of a rural Dongola resident contends that the case is still open.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced last week that Tommy E. Reams, 27, of Dowell, will serve 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for his part in the home invasion and beating of Gerald Dziczkowski of 250 Kimber Rd. in rural Dongola.

Dziczkowski was found dead in his home on the evening of Oct. 22, 2009.

Another round of winter weather for area More than a foot of snow recorded so far this season

Another winter storm brought more snow and cold to the Union County area during the past week.

So far this winter, the area has received more than a foot of snow; 13 inches, had been recorded through this week. Snow in varying amounts has been on the ground in some areas for weeks.

Wildcats fall to Du Quoin

The Anna-Jonesboro High School boys’ basketball team remained in striking distance until the final half in a 61-35 loss to host Du Quoin Friday, Feb. 19.

“They turned up the pressure and we didn’t handle it well,” A-J head coach Robby Wright said. “It kind of got away from us. That’s the first time we’ve been overly matched this year.”

Around a pair of 3-pointers, the Indians jumped to a 12-4 lead to open the game before Jordan Adams scored back-to-back baskets  to pull the Wildcats to 12-8.

Du Quoin led 14-8 after one quarter.

Robert “Bob” Lee Mathis

Robert “Bob” Lee Mathis, 78, of McClure, died at 5:19 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on Dec. 15, 1931, in Flora, Texas, the son of Herbert and Lily Lynn Mathis.

He married Donna Kee on May 22, 1965, in Ware.

He was of the Pentecostal faith.

He loved to play the steel guitar and was a fan of country music. He was a member of a band named BVD’s.

A-JCHS student Elizabeth Bell named National Merit Finalist

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School principal Brett Detering has announced that the National Merit Scholarship Program has honored Elizabeth Bell as a National Merit Finalist.

The A-JCHS senior was one of only four Southern Illinois high school students to have reached the semifinalist level.

School officials said it’s not yet known whether the other three students also advanced to the highest plateau along with Bell.

Dongola man pleads guilty to burglary, criminal sexual abuse

A Dongola man has pleaded guilty to two felony charges and will serve time in prison.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced Tuesday, Feb. 23, that Brandon D. Griffin, 26, of 445 Frey Ln., Dongola, entered a plea of guilty to one count of burglary and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Burglary is a Class 1 felony. Aggravated criminal sexual abuse is a Class 2 felony.
