A-J FBLA members receive awards at area conference

The Illinois Future Business Leaders of America, FBLA, Southern Area Conference was held Thursday, Jan. 14, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Four-hundred-sixty-four advisers, members and guests registered from 18 area schools: Anna-Jonesboro, Carbondale, Carterville, Christ Our Savior Lutheran in Evansville, Du Quoin, Hamilton County, Harrisburg, Herrin, Marion, Mt. Vernon, Murphysboro, Pinckneyville, Shawnee, Sparta, Steeleville, Trico, Waltonville and Waterloo.

The theme of the conference was "FBLA: Simply the Best."

Annual Bald Knob Cross membership meeting set

The future of a Union County landmark will be the focus of discussion at an upcoming meeting.

The annual meeting of the Bald Knob Cross of Peace membershp is planned Tuesday, Feb. 9.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the welcome center which is located near the Cross of Peace atop Bald Knob Mountain near Alto Pass.

People from throughout the region who are interested in the future of the cross are invited and encouraged to attend next Tuesday's meeting.

Mid-Continent President’s List students named

Union County students have been named to the fall semester president’s list at Mid-Continent University in Mayfield, Ky.

The students are in the university’s Advantage accelerated degree completion program.

To achieve the president’s list, students must maintain a 4.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

President’s list students from the area are named below by their hometowns:

Anna: Vonda Hill.

Dongola: Mary Bartly.

Jonesboro: Amanda Hazel, Angela McClelland, Genny Robinson, Carla Whitaker.

Carterville ends season for A-J girls

Carterville avenged an earlier loss to Anna-Jonesboro with a 56-49 win in first-round action of the Class 2A high school girls’ basketball regional at Murphysboro Tuesday, Feb. 9.

The Lady Wildcats led 19-15 after one quarter and were ahead 20-19 at the half.

A-J led 31-30 going into the final period but the Lady Lions went on a 16-8 run in the frame to post the come-from-behind win.

Emma Basler scored 18 points to lead the Lady Wildcats.

David Leonard “Dave” Bradley III

David Leonard “Dave” Bradley III,  63, of Mt. Juliet, TN, formerly of Anna and Jonesboro, IL, died in Tennessee. 

He was the son of David L. “Bill” Bradley Jr. and Martha Wright Holloman who preceded in death.

He was a former teacher at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School, Shawnee Community College, and John A. Logan College.  Bradley was a retired commissioned officer (major) of the Kentucky and Kansas Army National Guard. 

Cobden’s Draper signs to play baseball at Rend Lake College

Cobden High School’s Steve Draper has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball this fall at Rend Lake College near Ina.

Draper, an outfielder, had a .406 batting average during the fall with a pair of doubles and 12 RBIs. He was 7 of 8 in stolen bases.

He had a .370 batting average during his junior year. As a sophomore, he had a .355 batting average.

He pitched 35 2/3s innings in the fall with 34 strikeouts. He was 6-0 on the mound with an 0.79 ERA.
