Local man sentenced for weapon violation, concealing fugitive

A Union County man has been sentenced to serve time in the Illinois Department of Corrections on two separate charges.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Nov. 18 that Jared Garver, 24, formerly of 213 E. Chestnut St. in Anna, was sentenced to four years in the Department of Corrections on one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Garver also was sentenced to three years in the Department of Corrections for concealing a fugitive.

Service set at Kornthal

Church near Jonesboro is scheduled to host a community Thanksgiving service on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

The service will be at 7 p.m.

Kornthal Church is located just south of Jonesboro, off of Illinois Route 127.

A pre-service performance will be presented by the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School concert choir.

The service is sponsored by the Union County Alliance of Churches.


        Dongola Thanksgiving service planned

        A community Thanks-giving service is planned Sunday, Nov. 21, in Dongola.

        The service will be at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Dongola.

        Participating Dongola area churches rotate hosting the community service, which is held each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

        The participating churches are First Baptist of Dongola, Bethany Baptist, Friendship Baptist, First Lutheran of Dongola, Mt. Olive Baptist, Maple Grove Baptist, Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian, St. John's Lutheran Church and Cypress Grove MB Church.

        Elizabeth Irene McGuire

        Elizabeth Irene McGuire, 78, of Makanda, died at 9:18 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at the Jackson County Rehab & Care Center in Murphysboro.

        She was born Aug. 18, 1932, in Anna, the daughter of Van Leroy and Cecile Williams Hartline.

        She married Daniel Davie McGuire on May 4, 1957, in Anna. He preceded her in death on May 17, 2007.

        Election results for Union County

        Just over 6,700 Union County voters cast ballots in Tuesday's general election.

        Here's a look at the outcomes of the various races and issues which were on the ballot in Union County:

        Proposed Amendment

        Voters were asked to decide the fate of a proposed amendment to the 1970 Illinois Constitution.

        The amendment would provide for the recall of the governor.

        Totals in Union County were:

        Yes: 3,252. No: 2,519.

        Federal Election

        Illinois voters selected a U.S. Senator in Tuesday's election.

        County commissioners continue work on budget for 2010-2011

        The Union County Board of Commissioners this week continued to work on a new budget.

        The budget was the focus of discussion for a good portion of a regular meeting of the county board which was held Monday afternoon. The meeting was at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

        The meeting also included an update on the construction of a new Union County courthouse.

        County officials also shared information about the local animal control program.

        Cody Bible

        <p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst"><strong style="">Mr. Cody Bible, age 29, of Anna, went to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ at 6:59 A.M. Wednesday, November 3, 2010 in Anna. He was born on December 12, 1980 in Carbondale, the son of Mark D. and Vicki L. Campbell Bible.</strong></p>

        Voters approve 2 more on county board

        End of an era: A familiar part of the Union County landscape has found a new home in Ohio. The rabbit sign at the former Bunny Bread bakery building in Anna was taken down last Thursday. The rabbit sign and accompanying letters on the building were removed and transported to the Bundy Baking Museum in Urbana, Ohio. The baking museum features vintage and modern signage, vehicles, advertising, and even turn-of-the-century baking equipment.
