Protect our natural beauty

To the editor,

I am writing as a concerned citizen – concerned that we will lose the loveliness of this region through careless neglect.

I confess that I am a "rural urbanite" – I was born in the city and choose to live in this beautiful county because I love this place – the people, the land and the towns of Southern Illinois.

I am encouraged by the increasing vitality of tourism to this area.

Litter problem is long term

To the editor,

If anyone has any doubts about litter despoiling the area, they should have been southbound on State Route 127 during the week prior to Nov. 4.

A tractor was mowing the right of way, creating a rear flow of cans, styrofoam cups, carry-out sacks, and some items about which we probably do not want to know.

You can see this along too many of our roadways. Counties and state.
