Beatrice H. Claxton

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style="">Mrs. Beatrice H. Claxton, age 96, of Jonesboro, died at 5:00 P.M. Wednesday November 17, 2010 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO. She was born November 6, 1914 in Kennett, Missouri, the daughter of Henry A. and Eva F. Pearl Hileman.<span style=""> </span> She married George Ferguson in 1936; he preceded her in death in 1966.<span style=""> </span> She then married Lee Claxton in 1969; he preceded her in death in 1991.</strong></p>

'They served for us. . .'

The words are so simple, yet so important. "They served for us." The words were displayed on one of the floats featured in the 2010 Veterans Day parade held Thursday, Nov. 11, in Anna. The parade again was sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of Anna. Many people turned out on an ideal autumn afternoon to show their support and appreciation for our veterans.

Christmas Bazaar set in Alto Pass

A Christmas Bazaar is planned Saturday, Nov. 27, in Alto Pass.

The bazaar will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Alto Pass Civic Center. Proceeds will go to community projects.

The event is sponsored by Alto Pass Quilters and friends.

Donations of craft items, baked goods, candies, jams and jellies are welcome.

A quilt raffle is planned. Chili and hot dogs will be served.

James Woodrow “Jim” Eaves

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 150%;">Mr. James Woodrow “Jim” Eaves, age 75 of Lick Creek, died at 9:58 pm, Monday, November 15, 2010 at the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born January 26, 1935 in Anna, the son of Woodrow Clifton and Jennie Cunningham Eaves. He married Faye Marie Haire on October 2, 1953 in Anna.</span></strong></p>

Louise Billingsley

Louise Billingsley, 89, of rural Buncombe, died Nov. 9, 2010 at 6:30 a.m. at Union County Hospital Long Term Care Facility in Anna.

She was born on Aug. 7, 1921, in the Elvira Township of Johnson County, the daughter of Joel “Joe” Dalton and Mae (Baker) Dalton.

Louise married Kent “R.K” Billingsley on Sept. 28, 1940, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 1995.

Benton defeats A-J for sectional volleyball title

Anna-Jonesboro lost 25-23 and 25-15 to Benton in the championship game in the Johnston City Class 2A high school volleyball sectional Thursday, Nov. 4.

“Even though we lost I feel pretty good,” A-J coach Amy Fitzgerald-Wilson said. “I’m really proud of them.”

It was the first time the Lady Wildcats had advanced to the sectional championship since 1980. It was the second consecutive season A-J had won a regional championship.

A-J finished the season 18-13 overall. Benton advanced with a 37-2 record.

Linda Sronce

Linda Sronce, 48, of Anna, died at 7:54 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

She was born on March 6, 1962, in Granite City, to Robert Wesley and Hazel Lucille (Young) Batson.

Linda is survived by her husband, Frank Flavin of Anchorage, Alaska; one daughter, Molly Marie Lang of Carbondale; one sister, Jeanette Kotosky of Anna; and one brother, Darrell Batson of Vienna.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and an infant brother.

Courthouse soil test work done, design work continues

Several updates on the construction of a new courthouse in Union County were reported this week.

County officials say they are hoping that construction of the new facility will start in April 2011.

The information was shared at a regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was Monday afternoon at the county courthouse in Jonesboro.

Returning starters key for Dongola girls’ success

Dongola High School girls’ basketball head coach Preston Hall will have a luxury this season a lot of coaches would love to put on the floor.

All the starters from last year’s squad return.

“I’m looking for positive things,” said Hall, who is entering his third season. “And, the girls are looking to get better this year. Each year they’re learning a little more. We’d like to finish somewhere around .500.”

Dongola finished 2-18 last year.

Forest fire continues in region

U.S. Forest Service/Shawnee National Forest firefighters battled a wildfire early this week in southwestern Jackson County.

Forest Service officials reported that the fire was in the Grassy Knob area.

The wildfire broke out as warm, very dry and windy weather conditions continued in the Southern Illinois area.

The Forest Service reported in a news  release that the wildfire had burned 409 acres. As of Wednesday morning, the wildfire was 60 percent contained.
