John W. Searles

John W. Searles, 83, of Darmstadt, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2010, at his home.

He was born on June 13, 1927, in Liberal, Mo., to Harvey and Bessie (Adams) Searles.

He married Dolores (Clubb) Hinton on May 10, 1972, in Bonne Terre, Mo. She survives him.

PAST plans to host Holiday Home Tours

The board of directors of the PAST organization of Union County met Monday, Oct. 23, at the Tripps’ “House Where Lincoln Stayed” in Anna. 

The regular monthly meeting included reports of past events and plans for future events.

PAST president Linda Hileman reported a splendid day for the ColorFest self-guided “walk around the neighborhood.” 

She thanked everyone for their participation and announced that the booklet, “Walk PAST” is still available at Country Cupboard, This ‘n That and from board members.

A-J’s Patterson signs to play softball at Southeast Missouri

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School’s Lindsey Patterson has signed a national letter of intent to play softball at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

A signing ceremony was held last week at the high school.

“She has very impressive work habits,” A-J softball head coach Kevin Stephens said. “She is the hardest working player I’ve coached. And, she wants to win badly.”

Stephens doesn’t feel Patterson will have any problem fitting in with Southeast Missouri State’s program.

Shawnee girls win Meridian tourney

Taylor Ellis scored 15 points to lead Shawnee to a 43-35 win over host Meridian to win the Lady Bobcat Classic high school girls’ basketball tournament Saturday, Nov. 19.

“It was a little closer than I thought it would be,” Shawnee coach Chad Pitts said. “They made a run on us, but we hung in there.”

It was the first time Shawnee has claimed the title.

Shawnee built a 15-5 first quarter lead and was ahead 22-16 at the half. The Lady Centurions pulled to 34-26 going into the final period.

A-J volleyball team wins second straight regional title

Jordan Edwards had 23 serve receives, 20 good serves, an ace and 16 digs to lead host Anna-Jonesboro to a 25-20 and 25-23 victory over Harrisburg for the championship of the Class 2A regional Saturday, Oct. 30.

A-J won its second consecutive regional title under head coach Amy Fitzgerald Wilson.

Chandra Parr had 9 good serves, 2 aces and 9 kills for A-J.

Emma Basler added 19 serve receives, 6 kills and 14 digs.

Karley Heath had 9 good serves, 2 aces and 5 assists.

Meisenheimer Stables wins two world grand championships

Meisenheimer Stables of Jonesboro recently returned from The Racking Horse World Celebration, held in Decatur, Ala., with two world grand championship wins. 

Lance Meisenheimer, trainer and rider, won the two championships on the same night.  The first horse, Illumination, had won the qualifying class earlier in the week in the amateur owned and trained division before being crowned the amateur owned and trained division’s world grand champion. 

Wine Trail shuttle service changes

SMART public transportation this week announced a change in its wine trail shuttle service.

The change is set to begin during the second week in November.

The west and east shuttle now will be in operation on Saturdays and Sunday only.

Low ridership on Thursdays and Fridays made it necessary to decrease the  service.

The north, east and west shuttles will not be in operation on Thanksgiving or Christmas weekend.

Dental Safari Coming to Anna

The Dental Safari Company is planning a visit to the Anna School District on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

The 100 percent mobile dental corporation travels to schools to provide dental examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatment and sealants as needed.

Every child in the district is eligible to be seen.

Each patient seen by Dental Safari will be entered into a drawing to win a prize.

The owner and creator of the Dental Safari Company is Dr. Melissa Morley.
