Injured Iraqi war veteran now hopes to help school children in the classroom

Someday soon, children will benefit from the lessons injured Iraqi war veteran Joseph E. Fraedrich has learned in the classroom and on the battlefield.

Fraedrich earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education during commencement exercises held Saturday morning, Dec. 18, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

It marks a big step toward a future the Cobden man hadn’t initially anticipated but a future he’s quite excited about.

Cobden 48, Shawnee 35

Bekah Russell scored 18 points to lead three players in double-digit scoring in Cobden’s 48-35 win over host Shawnee in South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball action Tuesday, Dec. 21.

It was the first loss of the season for the Lady Redskins, who fell to 7-1 overall. The Appleknockers improved to 5-1.

Kayla Quertermous added 16 points and Alysha Bottje 14 for all of Cobden’s scoring.

A-J wrestlers post 3-1 record Saturday at Benton Duals

After losing its first match, Anna-Jonesboro bounced back to win three matches and finish 3-1 at the Benton Duals in high school wrestling Saturday, Dec. 11.

The following are Wildcat matches with the winners listed:

Benton 36,  A-J 27

103 pounds: Devon LaFine won by pin in 1:38.

112 pounds: Andrew Adams won by pin in 1:22.

119 pounds: Daniel Heath won by pin in 3:23.

135 pounds: Forrest Palis won by decision, 7-4.

140 pounds: Chase  Hargrave won by decision, 3-1.

Cobden wins two games at Shootout

Rob Lehr scored 20 points to lead Cobden to a 59-53 win over Webber Township in the Cobden Shootout in boys’ high school basketball Saturday, Dec. 11.

Bo Gearhart added 19 points for the Appleknockers. Garrett Marks, R.G. Millis and Josh Aspen had 4 points apiece and J.C. Chapman, Tyler Lewey, Austin Flamm and Nathan Sweitzer 2 each.

Cobden led 12-11 after one  quarter and was ahead 29-26 at the half. The Appleknockers were ahead 42-33 after three quarters.

Snow, bitter cold blanket Union County Winter storm sweeps through area over weekend; another round expected at midweek

Bitter cold, strong winds, snow and the possibility of freezing rain highlighted Union County's weather during the past week.

Wintry weather arrived a little ahead of schedule. The "official" first day of winter is not until Tuesday, Dec. 21.

A winter storm swept through the region last weekend, leaving behind several inches of snow in some areas and temperatures near zero.

Snowfall in Anna measured just over 2 inches.

The low temperature for the past week in Anna was 3 degrees, which was recorded Tuesday morning.

Cobden Lions Club hosts Christmas dinner, ladies night

The Cobden Lions Club hosted its annual Christmas dinner and ladies night program Monday night, Dec. 13.

The holiday season event was held at St. Joseph's Church parish hall in Cobden. Approximately 70 people attended the celebration.

The event offered an opportunity to reflect on the Cobden Lions Club's successes and achievements of 2010.

"We have had a very successful year," Cobden Lions Club president Bill Tweedy said.

"This year, the weather was great for our Peach Festival and our income was one of our best years,"  Tweedy said.

Levee summit held Saturday at Wolf Lake Several hundred attend event

Several common themes were shared by those who spoke during a Southern Illinois Levee Summit which was held last Saturday in Union County.

There was praise for a local teacher and her students for pushing the need for the summit.

And there was a focus on a spirit of cooperation which will be needed to address a problem which exists nationwide and is expected to cost  billions of dollars to fix.

Saturday's summit brought concerned residents from throughout the region together to be a part of an overview of regional levee concerns.

Resolution addresses six county commissioners

A step was taken last week in connection with expansion of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

Union County voters have approved expanding the number of commissioners from the current three to five.

Two more commissioners will be added to the board in the 2012 election.

Last week, a resolution was approved "regarding the transition of terms for the current three member board of county commissioners and the addition of two county commissioners for six year terms."

Cobden 54, Century 31

Alysha Bottje scored 24 points to lead Cobden to a 54-31 win over host Century in South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball action Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Bekah Russell added 11 points for the Appleknockers. Kayla Quertermous added 8 points, Krysti Davis  4, Devyn Inman 3 and Maria Piper 2.

Cobden built a 15-8 first quarter lead and was ahead 26-20 at the half. The Appleknockers were out front 43-23 at the end of three periods.

Cobden is 2-1.
