Whites married 60 years

Robert and Shirley White of Cape Girardeau celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Dec. 30, 2010.

Bob and Shirley Russell were married on Dec. 30, 1950, in Piggott, Ark. Both are graduates of Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

The 60th anniversary celebration included a surprise visit by their grandson, Chad White; wife, Ashley; and great-grandchildren, Tyler and Conner. This visit marked Bob and Shirley’s first meeting with their 4-month-old grandson, Conner.

Cobden students honored at excellence breakfast

To celebrate November/December’s character education trait, caring, students at Cobden Elementary School attended an excellence breakfast.

Three students from each classroom in kindergarten through 6th grade were selected by their teachers to receive an excellence certificate and attend the breakfast. Students also had a chance to win prizes in a raffle. The upcoming character education trait for January is fairness.

Cobden falls twice at Shootout

The Cobden High  School girls’ basketball team struggled in the Carterville Shootout, losing two of its final games Saturday, Jan. 15.

Johnston City 48, Cobden 39: Kayla Quertermous had 19 points to lead the Appleknockers in the loss.

Jordyn Grey added 9 points, Devyn Inman 5, Maria Piper 4 and Alysha Bottje 2.

Cobden fell behind 15-9 after one quarter and 29-16 at the half.

Wildcat wrestlers do well Saturday at Quincy tournament

Brett Turner recorded Anna-Jonesboro’s highest finish ever in the prestigious Quincy tournament in high school wrestling Saturday.

Turner, in the 215 pound class, finished in fourth place. He pinned Quincy’s Malae Dauscaf in 1:33; Rockfall’s Derek Bingaman in 3:46 and decisioned Triad’s Hunter Schmidt, 11-8, and Belleville East’s Nicolas Weber, 6-1. He was pinned by Macomb’s  Braylon Cousin in 2:31 and lost the third place match in a pin to East Peoria’s Lucas Joseph in 1:41.

Chamber meeting held

Union County Chamber of Commerce had a monthly meeting Thursday, Jan. 13, in Anna.

Chamber executive secretary Jeannie Landis reported that the organization had 165 members at the end of 2010.

The annual Southern Illinois Miners baseball game for Union County is set for June 30.

The Small Business Development Center at Shawnee Community College offered several classes to chamber members last year.

Classes which were offered included "Build Your Own Business in Southern Illinois," "Word 2007," "Excel 2007" and "Pro 2010."

McGraths increase limited partner holdings with financial services firm

Mike McGrath, an Edward Jones financial advisor in Anna, and Millie McGrath, a senior branch office administrator, have accepted invitations to increase their limited partner holdings in The Jones Financial Cos., the holding company for the St. Louis-based financial services firm.

Mike joined Edward Jones in 1986 and has served investors in Union County for the past 25 years.

In addition, he is active in several local groups, including the Union County Chamber of Commerce and St. Mary’s Church in Anna.

Shawnee 64, Century 42

Shawnee pulled ahead early and went on for a 64-42 win over visiting Century in South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball Saturday, Jan. 15.

Shawnee led 19-2 after one quarter and 31-10 at the half. The Lady Reds were ahead 52-20 going into the final period.

Kaylee Boston had 19 points to lead the Lady Reds. Reagan Brown added 11 points, Morganne Kennedy and Taylor Ellis 10 apiece, Jordan Johnson and Kaelie Rains 6 each and Haley Murphy 2.

Shawnee, 11-3, is scheduled to play again Thursday, today, at Egyptian.
