Mark Owen Meyer

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 150%;">Mr. Mark Owen Meyer, passed away November 28, 2010 at his home in Clarkston, WA. He was born September 13, 1961 in Cape Girardeau, MO., the son of Gary and Delia Elam Meyer.</span></strong></p>

2010: Looking back at events in Union County

With 2010 now history, The Gazette-Democrat takes a look back at some of the "page one" stories which were reported last year:

January

Union County experienced bitterly cold weather and snow during the month. The month closed with a winter storm that dropped nearly 7 inches of snow on the county.

The first "state of the village" town hall meeting was held in Cobden.

A town hall meeting was held at Lick Creek School to discuss a proposed property tax increase.

A new year begins

A new year has begun, and 2011 should be an exciting year in Union County.

The new year will bring with it even more progress on the construction of a much-needed new courthouse for Union County. County officials met again this week with architects who are working on the project, and it shouldn't be too long before we get an idea of how the new building will look.

A-J falls to Du Quoin 70-55 in league pla

Connor Wheeler scored 35 points, including 4 3-pointers, to boost host Du Quoin to a 70-55 win over Anna-Jonesboro in Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division Conference high school boys’ basketball action Friday, Jan. 14.

Wheeler opened the game by hitting three 3-pointers to give Du Quoin a early 13-2 lead. The Wildcats fought back to pull to 19-10 after one quarter.

Dongola, Meridian, Century post victories in SEC tournament play

Dongola, Century and Meridian posted wins in the semifinals of the South Egyptian Conference high school boys’ basketball tournament at Cobden, Saturday, Jan. 22.

Dongola 58, Joppa 47: Jordan Eads and Tyler Eddleman scored 15 points apiece to lead the Demons to the win.

Clay Harris added 13 points for Dongola. Tyler Thompson had 7 points, Darius Schauer 5, Darin Gibson 3 and Brad Ralls 1.

Bonners married 50 years

Jim and Nancy Bonner will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, with a family luncheon.

The couple met in high school in Centralia, Ill., and were married on Jan. 28, 1961, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centralia.

They have three children: Jimmy Bonner of Herrin; Rodney Bonner of Schaumburg; and Craig Bonner and wife Julie of Anna.

They have six grandchildren: Kali Bonner, Nick Bonner and Drew Bonner of Carterville; Benjamin Bonner of Schaumburg; and Kelsie and Kortnie Bonner of Anna.

Cobden girls go 1-4 at Herrin Tournament

The Cobden High School girls basketball team posted a 1-4 record in last week’s Herrin Holiday Tournament.

Du Quoin 50, Cobden 36: Kayla Quertermous scored 20 points to lead the Appleknockers in the opening round loss Monday, Dec. 27.

Bekah Russell added 11 points for Cobden, Alysha Bottje 3 and Jordyn Gray 2.

The Appleknockers built an 8-6 first quarter lead and were ahead 21-16 at the half. Cobden led 32-31 headed into the final period.

Geraldine Fisher

Geraldine Fisher, 84, of Dongola, died at 5:07 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Jonesboro Health Care Center.

She was born on Jan. 13, 1927, in Dongola, the daughter of Will and Mary Ellen Cook Baker.

She was married on April 12, 1946, to James Fisher. He preceded her in death on July 11, 1987.

Mrs. Fisher was a member of First Baptist Church in Dongola and was retired from Choate Mental Health Center in Anna.

Queen, king coronation highlight of Jonesboro School festival

One of the highlights of the fall season at Jonesboro School was the annual Fall Festival. The celebration included the coronation of a queen and king.

A large crowd filled the Jonesboro School gymnasium Thursday, Oct. 7, for the Fall Festival coronation. Noah Fuller, 8th grade son of Stanley and Cheryl Fuller, was crowned king. Sammy Brimm, 8th grade daughter of Richard and Missy Brimm, was crowned queen.
