A-J outscores Cobden in local rivalry

Destiny Dillow scored 17 points to boost host Anna-Jonesboro to a 49-31 win over Cobden in the annual Union County rivalry in high school girls’ basketball Saturday, Jan. 8.

Jessi Stone added 12 points for the Lady Wildcats. Emma Basler and Chandra Parr had 5 points each, Valerie Pender 4 and Erica Friebel, Rebecca Mitchell and Brooke Chamness 2 apiece.

Kayla Quertermous had 11 points to lead Cobden. Bekah Russell and Alysha Bottje had 9 points apiece and Devyn Inman 2.

Willis A. Hughes Sr.

<p class="MsoNormal">Willis A. Hughes Sr., 90, of Grand Tower, passed away at 6:35 p.m. on Monday, January 3, 2011, at Southeast Missouri Hospital, Cape Girardeau.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Willis was born at Eldorado, IL on May 6, 1920, to Elmer and Lorene (Bramlet) Hughes.<span style=""> </span> On March 22, 1941 he married Velma Gladys Estel at Perryville, MO.<span style=""> </span></p>

A-J bowling team in action

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School bowling team hosted a home meet Tuesday, Jan. 4.

The meet was played at The Strike Zone in Anna.

In boys’ competition, Herrin outscored A-J 2,630-2,134.

Herrin won the girls’ meet by a score of 2,545-1,635.

Mason Hayward led the A-J boys with an individual score of 499.

Chelsea Hicks was the top scorer for the A-J girls with a 375.

Cobden scores wins over Elverado, Agape Christian

Rob Lehr scored 21 points to lead Cobden to a 51-44 win over visiting Elverado in non-conference high school boys’ basketball Saturday, Jan. 8.

J.C. Chapman added 9 points, Bo Gearhart 7, Zach Moore and Josh Aspen 4 apiece, Tyler Lewey 3, R.J. Millis 2 and Austin Flamm 1.

The Appleknockers led 13-11 after one quarter. The Falcons came on for a 14-6 run in the second quarter to go ahead 25-19 at the half. Cobden made a 16-6 run in the third quarter to go ahead 41-25 going into the final period.

Velma I. Adams

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style="">Mrs. Velma I. Adams, age 93 of Arlington, TX., formerly of Mounds, IL., died at 12:40 p.m. Monday, January 17, 2011 at Arlington Memorial Hospital in Arlington, TX. She was born July 16, 1917 in Mounds, IL., the daughter of Ed. B. and Edith N. Hinkle Adams.</strong></p>

A-J set to play in tournament

The Anna-Jonesboro High School boys’ basketball team is scheduled to compete in the West Frankfort Classic Jan. 17-22.

Monday, Jan. 17, the Wildcats play Carterville at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 19, A-J takes on Eldorado at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 21, the Wildcats play West Frankfort at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 22, A-J plays Johnston City at 12:30 p.m. and Herrin at 9 p.m.


        Local business again sponsors holiday writing contest or students

        A Union County business continued a holiday season tradition in 2010 by sponsoring an annual writing contest.

        The contest, sponsored by Rusty's Home Center in Anna, was open to 3rd grade students at Union County area schools.

        "What Christmas Means to Me" is the theme of the annual contest.

        Each winner receives a giant Christmas stocking presented by Rusty's Home Center. The stocking is filled with gift items.
