Carolyn N. Fassler

Fassler age 72 of Anna died at 1:21 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011 in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO. She was born October 27, 1938 in Cairo, the daughter of Frank A. and Maude (Nelson) Neibaur. She married Thomas Fassler October 21, 1961 in Anna.<span style=""> </span></strong></p>

He was born November 18, 1947 in St. Louis, MO., the son of Thomas T. and Edwine Nugent Richards.</strong></p>

Cobden wins big over Dongola

Kayla Quertermous and Bekah Russell combined for 25 points to lead Cobden to a 43-19 win over host Dongola in South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Quertermous tallied 13 points and Russell 12.

Jordyn Gray, Maria Piper and Alysha Bottje had 6 points apiece for the Appleknockers.

Emily Terbrak scored 12 points to lead the Lady Demons. Halley Fuller had 7 points.

Dongola, which fell to 3-6 overall, play at Meridian Tuesday. Cobden, 7-5, is scheduled to  play Thursday, today, at Carterville.

Shawnee High School homecoming this week

Homecoming is being celebrated this week at Shawnee High School at Wolf Lake.

The celebration culminates with a number of special events on Saturday, Jan. 15, at the school.

At 4:30 p.m. Saturday, a hospitality room will open to welcome alumni.

The Shawnee High School Lady Reds basketball team will play Century in a 5 p.m. game.

The Shawnee boys’ basketball team is scheduled to play Dongola in a 6:30 p.m. game.

Gerald Dexter

Gerald Dexter, 75, of Montgomery and formerly of Cobden, died at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, in Valley West Community Hospital in Sandwich.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden. Burial will be in the Cobden Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.


        Union County Hospital Senior Circle Chapter plans trip to northern Michigan

        The Union County Hospital Senior Circle Chapter is planning to offer a seven-day/six-night motor coach tour to northern Michigan. 

        The tour is scheduled for June 12-18.  The cost is $635 per person based on double occupancy for Senior Circle members.

        The cost for nonmembers is $700 per person based on double occupancy. 

        Single occupancy is available for an additional $200 per person for members and non-members.

        Cletus Eddleman

        Martha A. Garrott

        <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%;">Mrs. Martha A. Garrott, age 87 of Jonesboro, died at 9:54 p.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2010 at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was born February 11, 1923, the daughter of Clifford and Este Winchester Roberson. She married Don Garrott on October 2, 1943 in Cape Girardeau, MO.</span></strong></p>

        Courthouse north addition demolition work planned

        A request for proposals will be sought for the demolition of the north addition of the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

        The issue was on this week's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

        The meeting was Tuesday afternoon at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

        A draft for the request for proposals for demolition of the north addition and a concrete floor system was approved at Tuesday's meeting. The concrete floor is part of a Union County Highway Department building.
