Week brings snow, more bitter cold

The Union County area was back in a deep freeze following a winter storm which dropped an inch or two of snow on the area.

The forecast from National Weather Service, NWS, office in Paducah called for a low temperature of around 7 degrees in the Union County area for Thursday morning (today).

The low dipped to 12 degrees Wednesday morning, Jan. 12, in Anna.

The high temperature today is expected to be in the mid-20s under a partly sunny sky.

Fundraising ideas: Taxes on tacks, faxes

Last week, as you may or may not recall, my journey through life included a game of Spin the Car. I am going to blame that incident for what follows.

Something more profound than an ice-induced motor car adventure happened last week in the Land of Lincoln.

Illinois legislators, in their infinite wisdom, decided to increase our state income tax by approximately 12,000 percent.

County hosts successful surplus property auction

An auction sale of Union County surplus property turned out very well, even though weather for the event was less than ideal.

The auction was held Saturday, Jan. 22, on the grounds of the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Saturday was very cold. Light snow flurries could be seen as the auction began shortly after 10 a.m. (The event lasted until about 1 p.m.) A cold wind added to the chill of the day.

More than 100 potential bidders registered for the event, which was conducted by 3D Auctions of Anna. Carl Dillow was auctioneer.

The banquet was held on the day before the actual youth waterfowl hunt so the young participants could be registered and receive assignments for their hunting blinds.

Miller was keynote speaker at the banquet. He is an advocate for getting young people more involved in outdoor activities, such as hunting and fishing.
