A-J, Cobden players sign with Logan College softball team

The John A. Logan Community College softball team has signed three high school players from the area to play for next year’s squad.

The players signed national letters of intent Saturday, Jan. 15, at the college, which is in Carterville.

Cobden’s Ana Duda and Kayla Quertermous and Anna-Jonesboro’s Jayda Rendleman have signed with the Lady Volunteers.

She was born August 4, 1949 in St. Louis, MO., the daughter of Lester Woodrow and Georgia Anna (Limpert) Montgomery.</span></strong></p>

<p style="text-indent: 0.5in;" class="MsoNormal">Evelyn T. “Evy” Knox, of Springfield, formerly of Alto Pass passed away Friday, January 14, 2011 in Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness.<span style=""> </span> She was born May 10, 1928 in Alto Pass the daughter of Floyd Trexler and Ida Mae Brown Trexler.</p>

Goreville wins SEC tournament title

Shawnee and Dongola each lost in the final games of the South Egyptian Conference high school boys’ basketball tournament at Cobden, Monday, Jan. 24.

Goreville claimed the tournament title with a win over Meridian.

Joppa 79, Shawnee 64: Despite a 21 point performance by Ty McMahan, the Redskins lost to the Rangers.

Adam Pennington added 13 points for Shawnee. Austin Treece had 12 points, Andrew Livesay 11, Aiden McMahan 3 and Gavyn Ellet and Jackie Ray Calvert 2 apiece.

Hospital's care continues after patient leaves ER

After a visit to the emergency room, it’s not uncommon for family and friends to check in to see how you’re doing, stop by with a casserole, or help with errands until you’re back on your feet.

However, you may not expect to hear from the ER staff members who treated you.

But patients who have visited the ER at Union County Hospital in Anna shouldn’t be surprised when they receive a phone call.

Cobden celebrates homecoming

Homecoming activities are underway this week at Cobden High School.

The week’s activities will culminate with special events planned Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14-15, at the high school.

A homecoming basketball game and coronation ceremony are planned Friday, Jan. 14.

Cobden is scheduled to face Egyptian in a homecoming basketball game. Tipoff is at 5 p.m.

Coronation of the homecoming queen and king will take place following the game.

Cobden, Meridian win first-round SEC games

Cobden and Meridian won first-round action in the South Egyptian Conference high school boys’ basketball tournament at Cobden Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Cobden 71, Joppa 57: Rob Lehr scored 30 points to lead the Appleknockers. It was his 1,000th career point.

J.C. Chapman added 10 points, Josh  Aspen 8, Tyler Lewey 7, Bo Gearhart 6 and Nathan Sweitzer, Garrett Marks, Austin Flamm  and Travis Moore 2 each.

Cobden led 18-17 after one quarter and went on a 25-12 run in the second quarter to build a 43-28 lead at the half.
