Proceeds will help to ensure that there will be a full season of baseball and softball for next year at the Anna school.

A luau meal is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The menu will include a barbeque sandwich, chips, dessert and a drink for $5.

Concessions and games are planned from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets will be 25 cents each.

Braving the cold

Last Saturday morning wasn't the most ideal time to be standing outdoors. The temperature was very cold, light snow flurries were falling and a chilly wind was blowing.

Nevertheless, more than a hundred people gathered on the grounds of the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro. Folks came to look for bargains at a surplus property auction sponsored by the county. The auction generated more than $45,000, which will go to the county highway department. We salute those who braved the cold, and maybe even made a bid.

Christmas project a success

To the editor,

The 2010 Union County Christmas project was again a great success and provided Christmas gifts for 386 children.

That success was due to the wonderful community that we live in.

Our community has been working together for many, many years to make Christmas better for those in need.

Our churches, civic groups and clubs, businesses and individuals all come together to make this project work.

Each year, we have special people, some we know and some we don't who help to bring everything together.

Future growth, development

Last week, nearly 50 people gathered for a town meeting which was held in a Union County community.

The Cobden Community & Business Association, CCBA, sponsored the meeting, in cooperation with the Village of Cobden. Representatives of the Connect SI initiative attended the meeting. Also present were representatives of several businesses which would provide broadband Internet service.

Courthouse project business on county board agenda

A busy, but fast-paced, agenda highlighted the open portion of the Union County Board of Commissioners' first meeting of 2011.

The meeting was Monday afternoon, Jan. 3, at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Monday's meeting included discussion about several issues related to the construction of a new county courthouse. Work is moving forward quickly on that project.

The county is planning to have a surplus property auction as it prepares to move out of the existing courthouse.

Local quilting bees are community efforts

One of my favorite books was a gift to me for chairing my first PAST quilt show in 2003.

“This Old Quilt” was edited by Margret Aldrich in 1975.

An introduction notes that quilting has long been an art form practiced by early pioneer craftswomen to today’s modern artisans.

The collection of stories in “This Old Quilt” is ”a heartwarming celebration of quilts and quilting memories.”

It refers to our “love affair with quilts and with the community-building that the creation process instills.”
