A-J’s big rally leads to win over Sparta

Trailing 42-33 going into the final quarter, Anna-Jonesboro went on a 23-6 scoring run to defeat host Sparta 56-48 in Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division  high school boys’ basketball action Friday, Dec. 23.

The Wildcats led 14-12 after one quarter. The Bulldogs fought back to pull ahead 24-16 at the half and outscored A-J 18-17 in the third period.

Brady Wright, who had a pair of 3-pointers, led A-J with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Auditions planned for musical

The Shawnee Hills Arts Council of the Anna Arts Center and the PAST organization of Union County are planning to cosponsor a Civil War weekend Feb. 10-12, 2012, in Anna.

One of the major events planned during the weekend is a musical called "Lincoln: The Life and Times."

Auditions for the musical are scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19. The auditions will be at the Anna Arts Center at 117 W. Davie St. in Anna.

Those who want to audition are asked to prepare a one-minute song and to be ready to read from a script.

Harold Lloyd Green

He was born October 9, 1941 in Anna, the son of Robert and Dora Edwards Green. <span style="">        </span></span></strong></p>

Woman in custody in connection with death of young boy

A Union County woman was taken into custody early this week in connection with an investigation surrounding the death of a 4-year-old boy in rural Jonesboro.

The child's death was reported to have occurred Saturday night, Dec. 10.

Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds and Union County Sheriff David Livesay on Tuesday reported that Sacha E. Brown, 29, of 25 Follis Dr. in Ware had been taken into custody.

Brown was taken into custody Monday evening, Dec. 12.

Ted Earnhart

Three fail to register

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds and Union County Sheriff David Livesay reported Tuesday that three men had been charged with failure to register as a sex offender.

The men were cited following a sex offender compliance check which was conducted by the sheriff’s office.

The three men were identified as:

Scott E. Peterman, 40, of 219 W. Hickory St., Cobden. Peterman was charged with one count of failure to register as a sex offender. The charge is a Class 3 felony.

Rendleman receives award

Brad Rendleman of Jonesboro recently received a member of the year award which was presented by the Illinois Environmental Health Association’s South Chapter.

Rendleman is environmental health director for the Southern Seven Health Department.

The award recognized Rendleman for distinguished service, leadership and devotion to the Illinois Environmental Health Association.

The award was presented during the association’s annual educational conference, which was held recently in Peoria.

Christmas 1941: 70 years ago in Union County Holiday season observed only weeks after attack on Pearl Harbor

Christmas Day 1941. The holiday fell on a Thursday 70 years ago.

Since it was a Thursday, that week's edition of The Gazette-Democrat arrived on the same day as Christmas.

Union County's celebration of the holiday was dampened by sad news.

On Dec. 7, 1941, only a couple of weeks before Christmas, the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and plunged the United States into World War II.

The news from Hawaii quickly hit home.

Georgia Larry Mowery

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 26, from 4-8 at Crain Funeral Home in Ullin.</span></strong></p>

Wildcats score win over Appleknockers

Brady Wright tossed in 16 points and pulled down 9 rebounds to power Anna-Jonesboro to a 62-32 win over host Cobden in non-conference high school boys’ basketball action Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Travis Smith scored 15 points for the Wildcats. Wright and Smith each had a pair of 3-pointers. Smith also added 5 rebounds.

Tyler Vaughn, who also made a pair of 3-pointers, added 7 points and 2 rebounds for A-J. Jarid Veronesi chipped in 7 points, Jay Kemp 5, Caleb Mixen and Ben McFarland 4 each, Cody Garver 3, Evan Hughey 2 and Colton James 1.
