Lady ‘Cats 40, Marion 37

Jessi Stone scored 21 points to lead Anna-Jonesboro to a 40-37 win over Marion at the Harrisburg Preview Tournament in high school girls’ basketball action Thursday, Dec. 1.

Kim Mixen added 10 points for the Lady Wildcats. Brooke Chamness and Valerie Pender each chipped in 4 points and Katie Grant 1.

Marion built an early 14-5 first quarter lead. Each team only scored two points in the second quarter giving Marion a 16-7 halftime lead.

Music set at Old Feed Store in Cobden

An afternoon of music is planned Sunday, Dec. 4, at The Old Feed Store in downtown Cobden.

Music will be performed from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Old Feed Store is located at 111 N. Appleknocker.

Local artists who are scheduled to perform include the Free Range Chicks, Dakota Cummins with Modgrass and friends and The Ole Fishkins. The cover charge is $6.

Sandwiches and soups by chef Jamie Boaz will be available.

A few local artists and vendors will have goods for sale.

Speed, defense keys for Cobden girls

The Cobden High School girls’ basketball team will not be lacking in one area this season.

“We have some speed on the team,” said first-year Cobden coach Keri Jones, a former Sikeston, Mo., High School athlete. “And, we should have a good defense.”

Jones will be attempting to build a successful team around the return of a trio of seniors: 5-7 guard Bekah Russell, 5-7 forward Krysti Davis and 5-5 guard Katie Mowell.

Juniors on the squad are 5-11 forward Devyn Inman and 5-8 forward Marisa Howe.

Shawnee 66, Cobden 47

Andrew Livesay scored 24 points to lead Shawnee to a 66-47 win over host Cobden in South Egyptian Conference high school boys’ basketball action Friday, Dec. 16.

Gage Shelton added 14 points for the Redskins. Austin Treece and Aiden McMahan scored 10 points each, Gary Pind 6 and Gavyn Ellet 2.

J.C. Chapman scored 19 points to lead the Appleknockers. Josh Aspen added 9 points, Nathan Sweitzer 6, Parker Flamm and Zach Moore 5 each, Tyler Lewey 2 and Jordan Waldrop 1.

Anna Kroger plans celebration

Three employees at Kroger in Anna will be honored for service totaling 100 years during a customer appreciation event Saturday.

J.R. Blattel has 40 years, and Karen Robinson and Melissa Doody each have served 30 years with Kroger in Anna.

Saturday's event includes a ribbon cutting for the opening of the new Kroger fuel center at 10 a.m. and a chance to meet Little Miss Kroger. Refreshments will be served from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ralph H. Anderson

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mr. Ralph H. Anderson, age 55 of Cobden, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2011 at the Cobden Rehab and Care Center. He was born January 25, 1956, the son of Ralph G. and Mary Anderson.</span></strong></p>

Ware woman charged with murder in connection with death of 4-year-old

A preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday morning, Jan. 10, in the case of a Union County woman who has been charged in connection with the death of a child.

The victim, identified as Justin James Hepburn, 4, died at 7:58 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at his home in rural Jonesboro.

Funeral services for Justin were last Friday morning in Jonesboro.

The woman, who was taken into custody last week, faces multiple charges in connection with an investigation surrounding the death of the boy.
