Inside game expected to be strong for A-J girls’ basketball team

Opponents could notice a different look  in the paint for the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School girls’ basketball team this season. 

“Our inside game should be really, really strong,” A-J girls’ basketball coach Brian Clark said. “We’ve got two pretty good inside players back.  We’ve got the size.”

The Lady Wildcats return two seniors from last year’s 13-14 squad. Clark is looking for success from the inside dual threat of 6-1 center Jessi Stone and 5-9 forward Valerie Pender.

Weather: Surprise snow falls Tuesday morning

Motorists found the going slow and slippery when they headed to work Tuesday morning in the Union County area.

About an inch of snow was measured in Anna.

The National Weather Service, NWS, office at Paducah reported that rain changed to snow across most of Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri before daybreak Tuesday, then across western Kentucky early in the morning.

A steady wet snow fell for two to three hours in many places.

Accumulations averaged 1 to 2 inches across much of Southern Illinois.

Chiropractor guest speaker at Cobden Women’s Club meeting

The Cobden Women’s Club met Friday afternoon, Nov. 18, at the home of Ruth Hardin, with JoeAnn Clutts as cohostess.

The meeting was opened with the pledge to the flag.

The program was given by Dr. Jason Ozbourn, a chiropractor.

He explained how pain in the body can represent an issue in the body.

He said people can react to pain in the joints or back in various ways. They can ignore it. They can take a pill. They can take massage therapy. They can take rehab and exercise. They can have surgery.

Marguerite Maurine Koenig

Marguerite Maurine Koenig, 75, of Wilmington, Del., died at 2:03 p.m. Dec. 12, 2011, at Parkview Nursing Home.

She was born on Jan. 24, 1936, the fourth child of Everett Albert and Georgia Lillian Dieterich Baker, in Cooperstown, Brown County, Ill.

She married Charles Emanuel Koenig on June 16, 1984. He preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 2009.

Rainy weather in area slows courthouse construction work

Recent rainy weather in the region has put the construction of a new Union County courthouse in Jonesboro behind schedule.

An update on the project was shared at last Friday morning's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was Friday morning at the community building in Jonesboro.

Courthouse construction project manager Mike Smith presented an update to the commissioners.

Smith reported that due to heavy rain, construction was behind by two weeks. Rainy weather has continued for the past week.

Sept 29, 1933, the son of Harvey Evert and Motell Cook Bourland.</span></strong></p>

Griggs selected to receive customer service award

David Griggs, director of the rehabilitation services department at Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna, has been chosen to receive the 2012 Platinum Customer Service Award from the Illinois Department of Human Services, DHS.

Griggs was nominated by a coworker for “going the extra mile” every day, serving as an example to other employees.

Recipients of the GEM Award (Platinum Customer Service) are selected based on a number of criteria.

Filing begins for 2012 primary election

Candidates began filing nominating petitions this week for the 2012 Union County primary election.

The primary election is scheduled for March 20, 2012.

The filing period began at 8 a.m. Monday. Candidates can continue to file nominating petitions through Monday, Dec. 5.

Petitions are filed at the Union County clerk's office. The clerk's office is located at the Union County Courthouse at Jonesboro.

Wildcats post win over Hamilton County at Harrisburg tourney

The Anna-Jonesboro High School boys’ basketball team finished with a 2-2 record at last week’s Harrisburg Preview Tournament.

Goreville 71, A-J 51: The Wildcats remained within striking distance until the final quarter against the second place Blackcats in the loss Saturday, Dec. 3.

Goreville led 15-14 after one quarter and 32-28 at the half. The Blackcats went on a run in the third quarter that the Wildcats just couldn’t keep up with. A-J was outscored 39-23 in the second half.
