Hicks picked for honor in SIU win

Former Anna-Jonesboro Community High School athlete Rik Hicks received an outstanding performance award in Southern Illinois University’s recent football win over Eastern Illinois.

Hicks was picked for a “top block” award for his performance as a fullback for the Salukis.

SIU defeated Eastern Illinois 45-28.

Hicks, a 6-2, 224-pound sophomore, has been used primarily as a key blocking back in SIU’s offense.

SIU’s final game of the season will be Saturday at Indiana State, a team that features another former A-J athlete.

Senior Circle program Christmas celebration set

The Union County Hospital Senior Circle program plans to host its annual Christmas celebration on Thursday, Dec. 8.

The celebration is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Anna Heights Baptist Church.  

The event is for Senior Circle program members.  

The cost is $15 per person and the deadline to register and submit payment is Nov. 28.  

The evening will feature a catered meal, a brief program and musical entertainment provided by Brian D. Caraker, who specializes in easy listening and jazz.  

I-66 project study receives funding Union County included

Recently approved federal transportation grants for Illinois will include $3.6 million to help study and evaluate the most feasible route for a new road between Paducah and Cape Girardeau.

State Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, announced the funding Tuesday for a road which has been designated as the Interstate 66 project.

I-66 surfaced as a topic of discussion at a Nov. 4 meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners. The meeting was in Jonesboro.

Friends of Stinson celebrate 10th anniversary

A Union County organization celebrated its achievements and looked forward to a bright future during a 10th anniversary celebration last Saturday afternoon in Anna.

The special occasion was hosted by the Friends of Stinson Library District Inc. The celebration took place at the landmark Stinson Memorial Library in Anna.

The Friends of Stinson Library District organization was formed in the fall of 2001. The group was formed to build community support for the library, its programs and services.

Timothy P. Lauderdale

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mr. Timothy P. Lauderdale, age 47 of Anna, died at 7:56 a.m. Monday, October 31, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO. He was born July 3, 1964 in Elgin, the son of Darrell E. and Velma J. Harper Lauderdale.</span></strong></p>

Winstead W. Morgan

<p style="text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mr. Winstead W. Morgan, age 86 of Jonesboro, died at 12:55 a.m. Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born July 10, 1925 in Jonesboro, the son of Charles and Lela Frick Morgan. He was one of five children to Charles and Lela.</span></strong></p>

Fred L. Baker

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mr. Fred L. Baker, age 81 of Wolf Lake, died at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born March 7, 1930 in Dongola, the son of William and Mary Cook Baker. He married Betty Rhodes on March 30, 1951 in Piggott, Arkansas.</span></strong></p>

Carla Serantoni honored as teacher of year

Carla Cunningham Serantoni, formerly of Union County, has been honored as the high school teacher of the year for the Chicago District of the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

She is a 1966 graduate of Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

Serantoni is a national board certified teacher. She is department chairperson for the physical education department at Lane Tech High School in the Chicago area.
