Wilma G. Vosburgh

Wilma G. Vosburgh, 92, of Anna, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, in the Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin.

She was born on July 17, 1919, in Okmulgee, Okla., the daughter of William O. and Alice G. Fletcher Lawrence.

She married Arthur E. Vosburgh. He preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1998.

She is survived by one sister, Julia (Carrol) Grammer of Makanda, other relatives and friends.

Wildcats face hard-running Mt. Carmel Aces Third round, state football playoffs

The Mt. Carmel high school football team has prided itself on its defense this season.

"We're a very strong defensive team," Mt. Carmel football coach Darren Peach said. "That's the strength of our football team."

The Golden Aces, 10-1, will be at 'The Pit' Saturday to take on Anna-Jonesboro, 9-2, in quarterfinal action of the Illinois High School Association Class 3A football playoffs.

A-J golfers Hicks, Miller receive honors

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School’s Cortni Hicks and Abby Miller have been selected to the Southern Illinois Coaches Association Preps Girls’ Golf All-South Team.

Hicks, who was an All-South selection in 2010, shot a 91 at the sectional and 92s at the regional and Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division Conference Tournaments.

She had a seventh place finish at the A-J Invitational and finished ninth at the Massac County Invitational.

Her scoring average was 89.2 score for 18-hole courses and 43.9 for 9-hole courses.

Kornthal service set

An annual community Thanksgiving worship service is planned Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Kornthal Church south of Jonesboro.

The service, which begins at 7 p.m., is being sponsored by the Union County Alliance of Churches.

Kornthal Church is 3 miles south of Jonesboro, just off Illinois Route 127.

The service will be led by members of the alliance of churches. Special music, reading and proclamation are planned.

Wilma Stroehlein

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;"><span style="">        </span> Mrs. Wilma Stroehlein, age 81 of Cobden, died at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011 at her home in Cobden. She was born July 29, 1930 in Wolf Lake, the daughter of John and Helen Hale Livesay. She married Ralph Stroehlein on December 16, 1952 in Wolf Lake.</span></strong></p>

A-J in 3A state football quarterfinals Host Mt. Carmel Saturday afternoon

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School is set to host a quarterfinal round game this Saturday in the Illinois High School Association Class 3A football playoffs.

The Wildcats will face Mt. Carmel in the game. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at The Pit, A-J's home field.

Ticket prices for the game are $6 for everyone. Gates open at 11 a.m.

For those who can't make it to the game, WIBH radio in Anna will air all of the playoff action.

A-J comes into the game with a 9-2 record. Mt. Carmel is 10-1.

Golda H. Brown

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mrs. Golda H. Brown, 87, of Anna, died at 6:15 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2011 at the Union County Nursing Home in Anna.<span style=""> </span> She was born December 22, 1923 in Goreville, the daughter of William and Edna Grace Howell.</span></strong></p>

Firearm deer hunting season begins

Illinois’ most popular hunting season begins Friday, Nov. 18, and continues through Sunday, Nov. 20, as hunters head to the field for the opening weekend of the  firearm deer season. 

The seven-day firearm hunt will conclude on Dec. 1-4.

“Firearm deer season in Illinois is an anxiously awaited time of year for thousands of hunters,” Illinois Department of Natural Resources, IDNR, director Marc Miller said in a news release.
