70.41 inches!

Through Tuesday of this week, more than 70 inches of precipitation had been recorded during 2011 in Anna.

A similar total has been recorded by the National Weather Service, NWS, office in Paducah.

Year-to-date precipita-tion as of Dec. 6 at Paducah was 72.58 inches.

This surpassed the previous record precipitation for a year. The record had been 70.58 inches, which was set in 1950. Records at Paducah date back to 1937.

Union County Hospital Senior Circle chapter planning trip to Branson

The Union County Hospital Senior Circle chapter is offering a five-day/four-night motor coach tour to Branson, Mo. 

The tour is scheduled for April 30 through May 4, 2012. 

The cost is $550 per person based on double occupancy for Senior Circle members.

The cost for non-members is $650 per person based on double occupancy. 

Single occupancy is available for an additional $120 per person for members and non-members.

Attending Oprah show pays big dividends for Anna native

Attending the taping of an Oprah Winfrey show paid big dividends recently for Anna native Candi Merriman Davis.

Davis and her husband,  Steve Davis, recently took delivery of two new Volkswagens and many other prizes.

She explains: "My husband and I attended a taping of the Oprah show last November and managed to be in the Favorite Things show.  We were awarded tons of prizes which included a new 2012 VW Beetle.

Habitat for Humanity dedicates first Anna home

A Union County family has a brand new home, just in time for Christmas.

Last Saturday morning, the family was given the keys to the first home built in Anna by Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry.

The organization's website notes that:

"Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses alongside our homeowner partner families.

Anna church buys Sunshine Inn at auction

The new owners of the Sunshine Inn community center building in Anna say the facility could have a wide range of possible uses.

The building had been owned by Union County for a number of years.

The Union County Board of Commissioners recently declared the Sunshine Inn to be surplus property.

Monday night, Nov. 21, the structure, billed as an "historic community building," was sold at auction. The auction took place inside the building, which is located at 400 S. Main St.

Courthouse project update: More rain, mud

More rain. More mud.

That's been the story surrounding work in recent weeks on the construction of Union County's new courthouse in Jonesboro.

An update on the project was shared at last Friday morning's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was at the community center in Jonesboro.

Courthouse construction project manager Mike Smith reported that during the period from Dec. 2 through Dec. 16, 6 more inches of rain had been recorded at the site, along with 12 inches of mud.

Chamber hosts banquet, presents awards

The Union County Chamber of Commerce celebrated the successes of the past year at the organization's annual banquet.

The banquet was Thursday night, Dec. 8, at Von Jakob Vineyard near Alto Pass.

The evening began with a social hour, which was followed by dinner and an awards program.

During the awards program, the chamber honored a business of the year, a new business of the year and citizen of the year. A business improvement award was presented.

Filing ends for primary election

Filing of nominating petitions by candidates who plan to run in the 2012  Union County primary election ended Monday, Dec. 5.

The primary election is set for March 20, 2012.

The filing period began at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28.

Petitions were filed at the Union County clerk's office in the courthouse at Jonesboro.
