Two semis involved in accident on interstate

Two semi-tractor trailer trucks were involved in a traffic accident which happened at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, on Interstate 57.

Illinois State Police District 22 personnel responded to the accident call.

The accident happened at milepost 40 in the southbound lane of the interstate.

State police reported that one of the vehicles involved in the accident was a blue 2012 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer truck driven by Christopher L. Tracy, 22, of Pleasant Hope, Mo.

Harold W. Locke Jr.

Harold W. Locke Jr., 83, of Jackson, Mo., died at 11:35 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on Dec. 9, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, the son of Harold William and Merna Ewart Locke Sr.

He married Peggy Childs on March 1, 1951.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was owner and operator of Locke Distributing for 35 years. He managed four warehouses throughout Southeast Missouri.

Minnie Rosetta Parker

Minnie Rosetta Parker, 75, of Grand Tower, died at 9:40 a.m. Nov. 30, 2011, at Forest Creek Village in Indianapolis, Ind.

She was born in Anna-Jonesboro on Feb. 11, 1936, the daughter of Oscar and Leona Taylor Sanders.

She married John Calhoun on Dec. 25, 1950. He preceded her in death in 1963. She later married Walter (Bud) Parker on March 2, 1983. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1995.

She also was preceded in death by three infant grandchildren, three brothers and one infant sister.

A-J boys’ basketball will emphasize defense this season

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team plans to emphasize defense in order to be successful this  season, according to A-JCHS coach Mike Chamness.

“We’ve got to do better defending than we did last year,” coach Chamness said. “We’ve got to do better than letting teams score in the 60s (points) a game. If we can hold them in the 40s and 50s we’ll have a chance to have a good season.”

The Wildcats will return three senior starters from last year’s 15-15 squad to try to build a winning team around.

Anna Council hears opposition to Sunday liquor sales

Opposition to the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sunday was voiced at last week's regular meeting of the Anna City Council.

The meeting was Tuesday evening, Dec. 20, at Anna City Hall.

Council members are reviewing a major streamlining of the city's existing ordinances.

The ordinances were the focus of lengthy discussion at the council's regular meetings on Dec. 6 and again on Dec. 20.

George “Alan” Purtle

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 16pt;">George “Alan” Purtle, 59, of Topeka, KS, formerly of Anna, died December 8, 2011 at Stormont Vail Regional Medical Center.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 16pt;">He was born on October 28, 1952 in Anna, Illinois to George John and Clara Rosalie (Basse) Purtle.</span></p>

Shawnee girls 8-0 after win over Cobden

Jordan Johnson scored 17 points to lead undefeated Shawnee to a 46-35 win over visiting Cobden in high school girls’ basketball Monday, Dec. 5.

Taylor Ellis added 13 points for the Lady Redskins. Reagan Brown had 5 points, Gwen Kuehne 4, Taylor Loveless 3 and Sanni Ahokas and Bethany McMahan 2 apiece.

Bekah Russell had 22 points to lead the Appleknockers. Audrey Sirles added 6 points, Laurelin Pitts 3 and Katie Mowell and Haley Tomazzoli 2 each.

John Gary “Little Deer” Rendleman

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;"><span style="">        </span> Mr. John Gary “Little Deer” Rendleman, age 69 of Wolf Lake, died at 9:01 a.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He was born January 24, 1942 in Anna, the son of Robert Howard and Iva Tweedy Rendleman. He married Sherry A. Rhodes on March 5, 1971 in Wolf Lake.</span></strong></p>

Clarence “Jack” Lilly

Clarence “Jack” Lilly, 77, of Oraville, died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at the VA Medical Center in Marion.

He was born on July 6, 1934, in Woodpeck, W. Va., the son of Stennie Caperton and Goldie Myrtle Agnes Griffith Lilly.

He married Virginia Rinehart on Nov. 30, 1956, in Arlington, Va. She preceded him in death on May 11, 2006.

Mr. Lilly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid hunter and he liked music and playing guitar. During their life together, he and Virginia liked dancing.
