Shawnee, Cobden fall in holiday tournament play

Shawnee and Cobden each had a second loss and were ousted from the double-elimination Sesser-Valier Holiday high school boys’ basketball tournament  Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Vienna 54, Shawnee 43: With the game knotted 8-8 after one quarter, the Eagles took over in the second quarter on their way to the win.

Vienna led 24-19 at halftime and 41-29 after three periods.

Andrew Livesay scored 18 points to lead the Redskins. Aiden McMahan added 13 points, Brandon Pind 4, Austin Treece and Gavyn Ellet 3 each and Gage Shelton 2.

Series will turn spotlight on region's artists

WSIU Public Television, the public media arm of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, SIUC, announces the debut of "Expressions," a new weekly local series that turns the spotlight on regional artists and their work.

Each half-hour episode follows artists on their journey toward creativity and showcases both their inspirations and the various techniques they use to create works of art.

Artists from the Union County area will be among those featured in the upcoming series.

Shawnee junior high boys 16-2

Shawnee won three games in recent junior high school boys’ basketball action.

Shawnee 47, Vienna 36: Daniel Parris scored 17 points to lead host Shawnee to the win over Vienna Friday, Jan. 13.

Dylan Boston and Lucas Matlock had 8 points apiece, Brady Reynolds 7, Nick Crane 5 and T.J. Foeste 2.

Shawnee 54, Egyptian 14: Parris poured in 32 points to lead host Shawnee to the win Wednesday, Jan. 11.

Matlock  added 6 points and Boston, Eli Baltzell, Foeste and Reynolds 4 apiece.

Successful Santa Cop program benefits more than 50 children

The Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Union County 911 office had their fifth annual Santa Cop program Dec. 13 at Anna Heights Baptist Church in Anna.

Employees shopped for and wrapped more than 375 Christmas gifts.

The gifts went to 53 children from the Dongola, Cobden, Lick Creek and Shawnee school districts.

Seventeen families also were given grocery baskets  which included items for their Christmas dinner.

Civil War Weekend planned Feb. 10-12

The Civil War began in 1861 and lasted until 1865.

Activities began last year throughout the county to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the war.

This year, two Union County organizations are joining together to present activities to remember the Civil War.

The Shawnee Hills Art Council at the Anna Arts Center and the PAST organization of Union County plan to sponsor a Civil War Weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 10-12.

Copper wire theft reported

Anna police continue to look for leads into the theft of more than $8,000 in copper wire from a local business.

Anna Police Chief Dale Foster said the theft of the wire was discovered early this week at Associated Lumber at 104 W. Chestnut St.

The wire was pulled off a roll, cut into 6-inch pieces and stolen.


        New Illinois laws crack down on repeat methamphetamine offenders

        New laws which are designed to crack down on repeat methamphetamine offenders and to strengthen the Illinois DNA database are among the measures initiated by Attorney General Lisa Madigan in the 2011 legislative session that took effect Sunday, Jan. 1.

        House Bill 1908 requires that repeat meth offenders must have a prescription to purchase or possess products containing pseudoephedrine, a key meth ingredient.

        The law targets the rise of “small-batch” cooks who obtain small, legal amounts of ingredients to make meth for their own use or a quick sale.

        2011: 72.82 inches of precipitation

        The new year in Union County started with cold and windy conditions. Temperatures began to moderate at midweek.

        The new year also started on a dry note – while 2011 came to an end with more than 6 feet of precipitation recorded last year in Anna.

        Official weather observer Dana Cross recorded a total of 72.82 inches of precipitation during 2011 in Anna.

        Cross noted that on the average, precipitation in Anna averages about 44 or 45 inches a year.

        Healthy Woman program seeks business partners

        The Union County Hospital Healthy Woman Program is seeking community business partners for 2012. 

        Business partners are given extensive advertising exposure and speaking opportunities throughout the year.

        "This is an excellent opportunity for businesses to market their services to a captive audience through monthly e-mails, direct mail pieces, a quarterly newsletter, and internet exposure depending upon their level of partnership," said Mary Nash-Swink, the hospital's marketing director.

        Emergency services on agenda

        Emergency services matters were on the agenda at a recent meeting of the Cobden Village Board of Trustees.

        The board approved the allocation of $280 to send four firefighters to the Illinois Fire Service Institute Winter Fire College.

        The village has been informed that the county has received grant funds for emergency storm warning radios. A list of vulnerable households has been developed. Those households are being contacted to see about receiving one of the radios.
