Wildcats win three games at Classic

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team finished 3-2 at the Mid-Winter Classic in West Frankfort to claim third place Saturday, Jan. 21.

A-J 51, Johnston City 44: After trailing at halftime, the Wildcats bounced back to claim the win Saturday, Jan. 21.

The Indians led 11-9 after one quarter and 24-13 at halftime. The Wildcats made a 21-6 third quarter run to pull ahead 34-30 heading into the final period.

Travis Smith scored 17 points and had 3 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.

Marion man sentenced for burglary

A Southern Illinois man has been sentenced to serve time in prison in connection with a residential burglary in Union County.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported that Morgan X. Alexander, 24, of 1704 W. Maplewood St. in Marion had been sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on a charge of residential burglary, a Class 1 felony.

Alexander was indicted by a Union County grand jury in November 2010. The indictment followed an extensive investigation conducted by the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Dongola takes third at SEC tournament Livesay nets 46 as Shawnee wins fifth-place game

Austin Hinkle scored 19 points to lead Dongola to a 62-57 win over Century for third place in the high school boys’ South Egyptian Conference Tournament played at Shawnee Community College near Ullin Saturday, Jan. 21.

“We played well,” Dongola coach Russ Marsh said. “It’s the first time in 12 years we’ve gotten a trophy in the tournament.”

Jordan Eads added 16 points for the Demons. Darius Schauer scored 9 points, Brock Patterson and Tyler Eddleman 8 each and Uriah Holmes 2.

Variety of activities set during 2012 in Cobden

The Village of Cobden, the Union County Museum and the Cobden Community and Business Association announce the following events which are scheduled during 2012 in the Union County community:

Saturday, March 3. The Union County Museum and General Store in downtown Cobden are scheduled to open for 2012.

Saturday, May 5. A spring community yard sale is planned.

Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3-4. The Cobden Peach Festival is scheduled.

Labor Day weekend, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 1-2. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail Festival is planned.

Carmelita Yting

Carmelita Yting, 64, of Jersey City, N.J., died Jan. 2, 2012, in Jersey City, N.J.

She was born on Feb. 2, 1947, in Jolo, Sulu, Philippines.

She is survived by two daughters, Luisa Vercide of Cobden and Hazelle Arreza of Gallatin, Tenn.; one son, Filemon Yting III of Jersey City, N.J.; four grandchildren, Vincent, Theresa, Matthew and Sydney; other relatives and many friends.

She worked as a registered nurse in both the New York and New Jersey areas.

Lady Wildcats defeat Cobden, Carterville

Kim Mixen scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, to power visiting Anna-Jonesboro to a 62-29 win over Cobden in non-conference high school girls’ basketball action Saturday, Jan. 7.

Jessi Stone added 13 points for the Lady Wildcats. Brooke Chamness scored 10 points, Natty Hepburn 6, Val Pender and Balyie Denny 5 each, Krista Pender 4 and Katie Grant and Sammy Brimm 2 each.

Bekah Russell scored 12 points to lead the Appleknockers. Haley Tomazzoli scored 10, Katie Mowell 3 and Ashley Millis and Audrey Sirles 2 each.

Anna Ruth (Rink) Ford

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">She was born on Jan. 3, 1940 in Cairo, the daughter of Francis and Anna Marie (Bucher) Rink.</span></strong></p>

Dorothy L. Martin

Dorothy L. Martin, 82, of Anna, died at 11:20 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at her home.

She was born on May 8, 1929, in Caney, Kan., the daughter of David E. and Josie May Woods Ellyson.

She married Maynard D. Martin on Nov. 24, 1946, in Dewey, Okla. He preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1983.

She was a charter member of the Anna Heights Baptist Church. She liked to teach children in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and serving refreshments at the church. She was an avid gardener.

Injuries reported in accident

Illinois State Police responded to a two-car crash on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at approximately 3:19 p.m. The accident occurred on State Route 3 just north of McClure in Alexander County.  

A southbound white 2009 Hyundai Accent, driven by Kristen M. Skelton, 22, of McClure, was stopped, attempting to turn west onto Bridge Street.  

A red 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by Donald C. Brimm, 59, of Anna, which also was southbound, struck the rear of the Hyundai.
