Junior high players earn postseason recognition

Several local players were selected for this year’s junior high Southern Illini All-Conference teams this fall in baseball or softball.

Anna’s Jake Wright, Bryce Osman and Jaryt Tripp, Jonesboro’s Nathan Vicenzi and Cobden’s John Russell were each selected to the all-conference boys baseball first team.

Anna’s Makenzie Carter, Madi Bigler and Katie Williams and Jonesboro’s Hailley Abernathy, Meghan Smith and Kenzi Conway were selected to girls’ softball first team.

Phyllis Vaughn

Phyllis Ann Vaughn, 67, of Anna, died at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

She was born on August 12, 1945, in Anna, the daughter of John Ragsdale and Laura Angeline Westbrooks Ragsdale.

She married Larry Vaughn on December 28, 1963.

She was a member of Anna First Baptist Church, as well as Beta Sigma Phi, for over 30 years. She retired from Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna.

Governor terminates AFSCME contract; legislator seeks end of ‘senseless battle’

In what was described as an unprecedented step, Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration on Tuesday, Nov. 20, terminated the state government’s contract with its largest employee union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFSCME, Council 31.

“In 40 years of collective bargaining, Pat Quinn is the first and only Illinois governor to terminate a union contract,” AFSCME executive director Henry Bayer said in a news release.

Wounded Warriors events scheduled

The Grassy Lake Hunting Club at Ware and Southern Illinois University Carbondale Intercollegiate Athletics was planning to host the Wounded Warrior IV event starting Wednesday, Nov. 29, and continuing on Thursday, today.

Wounded Warriors from Fort Campbell and Fort Knox, as well as other veterans, were going to be participating in the two-day event.

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, the day was scheduled to begin at noon with a lunch provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Vienna.

Albert Cardwell Joiner II

Albert Cardwell Joiner II, 81, of Anna, died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on Aug. 20, 1931, in Anna, the son of Albert Cardwell and Elizabeth “Betty” (Wright) Joiner.

He married Marilyn Joyce Hunsley on July 22, 1960, in Anna.

William E. “Bill” Rumfelt

<strong>Mr. William E. “Bill” Rumfelt, 96, of Anna, passed away at 12:28 P.M., Friday, November 9, 2012 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Anna.   He was born January 7, 1916 in Wolf Lake, the son of William Perry and Fulvia Freeman Rumfelt.  He married Mabel G. Harris on February 15, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri.  She preceded him in death on February 19, 2006.</strong>

Rhodes 101 Stop plans to open new store in Anna Nov. 15

PAJCO Inc. recently acquired the Trail of Tears Junction gas station at 148 Leigh St. in  east Anna.  

This location is the first Rhodes 101 Stop east of the Mississippi River.  

The Trail of Tears Junction ceased operations on July 31 and Rhodes 101 began immediately on a complete upgrade of the facility.  

The site will open Thursday, Nov. 15, as Rhodes 101 Stops Convenience Store.

PAJCO Inc. shared a news release which announced the grand opening of its location in Anna.

Massey coaching A-J wrestling squad

Former Anna-Jonesboro Community High School athlete Eric Massey has been hired as the new Wildcats’ wrestling coach.

Assistant coaches are former A-J wrestlers Brandon Cerney and Andrew Adams.

Junior Wildcat wrestling coaches Grover Mays and Rollie Hawk will also be assistants.

Massey said the team is still actively recruiting and trying to build up the roster.

The coaching staff still encourages anyone who is interested in going out for the team to do so.

Joe Leon Conant

Joe Leon Conant died on Veterans Day, Nov. 12, 2012.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1929, in Anna,  the sixth of 10 children of James and Lura Conant.

Mr. Conant received a Purple Heart for his service during the Korean War.

Mr. Conant moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he met and married Sonja 55 years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Sonja; three children, Linda, Ken and Carolyn; two grandchildren, Alex and Jacob; and three sons-in-law, Bob, Jim and Eric.
