SIUC announces fall semester honor students

Southern Illinois University Carbondale has named 3,307 students to its fall semester deans’ lists.

Deans’ list recognition goes to students who compile grade-point averages that meet or exceed performance standards set by SIUC’s schools and colleges. 

The minimum standards vary by college and range from 3.25 to 3.75 on a scale of 4.0 (perfect). 

Students from the Union County area who were named to the deans’ lists are named below by their hometowns.

An asterisk (*) denotes a student who earned straight A grades.

Committee of Ten representatives attend District 37 Board meeting

Representatives of a local Committee of Ten attended the most recent monthly meeting of the Anna School District 37 Board of Education.

The Committee of Ten is backing a proposed school reorganization effort that involves District 37. The issue will be on the March primary election ballot in Union County.

Committee members Joyce Crews and Marcia Abell attended the board’s meeting on Jan. 16. Abell read a statement asking the board to not spend further funds on legal services in fighting the reorganization referendum.

Keeping history alive

The 150th anniversary of the Civil War was commemorated with a series of special programs and activities last weekend in Union County.

The Civil War Weekend at the Anna Arts Center brought together a wide range of guest speakers, as well as special exhibits, displays – and even a musical about the life and times of Abraham Lincoln.

Attention was particularly focused on the impact of the Civil War on the lives of the people of Union County.

Shawnee School District 84 receives state funding for classroom project

A long-awaited classroom construction plan appears to be ready to move forward in Shawnee School District 84.

On Thursday, Feb. 16, Gov. Quinn announced that Illinois school districts statewide will receive a total of more than $623 million from the Illinois Jobs Now! program to construct new buildings or expand, repair and update existing ones.

The capital funding will provide needed classroom space, while supporting an estimated 4,000 construction jobs throughout the state.

Meridian set to host regional

Dongola, Cobden and Shawnee will compete in the Class 1A high school boys’ basketball regional tournament at Meridian High School in Mounds Feb. 20-24.

Meridian has been awarded the top seed, followed by Egyptian, Cairo, Century, Dongola, Shawnee and Cobden.

Century will play Dongola at 7:30 p.m Monday, Feb. 20.

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, Egyptian will play Cobden at 6 p.m. and Cairo will play Shawnee at 8:10 p.m.

Dongola youth in custody after Monday incident

A Union County youth was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, Feb. 22, after he was taken into custody in the aftermath of a violent domestic dispute which was followed by a pursuit which ended in Anna.

The youth, a 16-year-old Dongola boy, allegedly stabbed his mother and his ex-girlfriend's sister Monday evening.

Names of the boy and the victims were not being released by authorities as of early this week.

Both of the stabbing victims were transported by the Union County Ambulance Service to Union County Hospital in Anna for treatment.

Wildcats win two games in overtime

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team finished 2-1 in recent  action, both wins coming in overtime.

A-J 41, West Frankfort 38: A-J’s Brady Wright pulled down a rebound after the visiting Redbirds missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer in overtime to seal the win Saturday, Jan. 28. 

Wright led the Wildcats with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Jay Kemp added 10 points and 5 rebounds, Travis Smith had 7 points and 2 rebounds, Tyler Vaughn added 3 points and 3 rebounds and Caleb Mixen and Cody Garver each scored 2.
