Margie Wallace Hayden

Margie Wallace Hayden, 101, of Anna, and formerly of Mounds, died at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at the Union County Long Term Care Facility.

She was born on April 22, 1911, in America in Pulaski County, the daughter of Charles Henry and Jennie Lin Blanton Wesenberg.

Junior Wildcat wrestling tournament welcomes more than 230 competitors

The A-J Junior Wildcats Wrestling Club hosted its third annual tournament Sunday, Dec. 16, at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

Competitors came from Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee to wrestle in 3 to 14 year old age groups and in 36 to 257 pound weight classes. There were 230 boys and girls that competed in the event.

Wildcats defeat Cobden, fall in conference play

Ben McFarland scored 18 points and pulled down 7 rebounds to lead host Anna-Jonesboro to its first win of the season, a 58-42 victory over Cobden in non-conference high school boys’ basketball Saturday, Dec. 8.

“We needed that win to build some confidence,” A-J coach Mark Chamness said. “We’ve been playing better.”

Noah Fuller added 12 points and had 3 rebounds for the Wildcats. Zach Parr had 11 points and 2 rebounds. Tyler Vaughn had 8 points.

Alto Pass board approves ban on hydraulic fracturing

The Alto Pass Village Board last week approved an ordinance which bans hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, within the corporate limits of the Union County community.

A local organization which is opposed to fracking reported that Alto Pass is the first municipality in Illinois to take such action.

The action by the Alto Pass Board came at a regular meeting of the board on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Alto Pass village president Don Rehmer said the ordinance was approved unanimously by the board.

Blizzard brings 'nightmare' conditions to area

Union County residents found themselves digging out from under a blanket of wet, heavy snow after a blizzard swept through the region Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The snow was accompanied by strong winds, with gusts topping 30 miles per hour.

The exact amount of snow which fell on the Union County area was not available at press time Wednesday.

Snowfall estimates in the county ranged anywhere from 5 inches to 11 inches.

Cecil E. Franklin

<strong>            Mr. Cecil E. Franklin, 80 of Jonesboro, went to be with the Lord at 6:19 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.  He was born September 15, 1932 in Pomona, the son of Clarence E. and Ethel Cauble Franklin.  He married Glenda Lingle on August 3, 1978 in Grand Tower.</strong>

Shawnee, Cobden to play in Sesser-Valier tournament

The Shawnee and Cobden high school boys’ basketball teams both are scheduled play at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament Dec. 26-29.

On Wednesday, Dec. 26, Shawnee is scheduled to play Goreville at 1:30 p.m. Cobden faces Sparta at 5 p.m.

Woodlawn is the top seed, followed by Goreville, Waltonville, Chester, Sparta, Christopher, Johnston City and New Athens.

Other teams competing are Vienna, Zeigler-Royalton, Century, Marissa-Coulterville, Elverado and host Sesser Valier.

Wounded Warriors hunt held at local hunting club

A special hunting event for Wounded Warriors has proven to be a lifesaver for injured and wounded soldiers who are striving to adjust to life as a civilian.

Mike Husley can attest to that personally. Husley said he owes his life to the fourth annual special hunting event sponsored by the Grassy Lake Hunting Club near Ware and Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The 2012 Wounded Warriors hunt for the soldiers was held Thursday, Nov. 30.

Completion of courthouse work expected by late March/early April

Completion of the construction of Union County's new courthouse now is expected by late March or early April of 2013.

An update on the project was shared at a regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners which was held last Friday morning. The meeting was at the community center in Jonesboro.

Courthouse construction project manager Mike Smith shared the following projected timeline for the new county facility:

•The county 911 system will switch control from its old facility to the new building when wiring has been completed.
