A-J expects to have strong bench this year

 The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team could have a stronger bench this season than last.

“We’ll be able to play a lot of guys this season,” A-J coach Mike Chamness said. “A lot of players will be interchangeable.”

The Wildcats return three starters from last year’s 14-16 squad.

The trio includes 6-4 junior forward Jay Kemp,  6-2 junior guard Tyler Vaughn and 6-1 sophomore guard Noah Fuller.

Gary Beisner

<strong>Gary Beisner, 64, of Anna, died at 6:37AM, Tuesday, November 06, 2012 at his home surrounded by family.</strong>

<strong>He was born on February 23, 1948 in Murphysboro, IL the son of William August and Ola Mabel (Nelson) Beisner.  He married Penny Garrett on June 2, 1973.  She survives him. </strong>

Bigler relishes challenge as he runs for state office

The transition from being a local political candidate to one seeking a major state office has been a big one for Michael Bigler of Anna, but it's a challenge he's relishing.

Bigler is the Democratic candidate for the Illinois State Senate's 58th District. Part of Union County is in the Southern Illinois legislative district.

Bigler's previous political experience included election to the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School District 81 Board of Education and the Anna City Council, on which he now serves.

Greenville rallies to defeat A-J in Class 3A playoffs

The Anna-Jonesboro  Community High School football team jumped out to an early 14-0 lead but couldn’t hold on in a 55-27 loss to host Greenville in first-round action of the IHSA Class 3A playoffs Saturday afternoon, Oct. 27.

The Wildcats trailed 29-27 early in the fourth quarter when the Comets erupted for four unanswered touchdowns.

“We knew going in they would be very explosive on offense and we would have to stay away from the big play,” A-J coach Brett Detering said.  “They’ve got some big weapons.”

Anna police report recovery of stolen items

The Anna Police Department reports that a  number of items which allegedly were stolen during a recent series of break-ins which occurred in the Union County community have been recovered.

Anna Police Chief Dale Foster said this week that an investigation into some of the break-ins has been extended to Carbondale.

Multiple break-ins have been reported which involved vehicles, residential locations and storage units in east Anna.

Union County voters once again will have a chance to do a little bit of exercise next Tuesday.

Tuesday, Nov. 6, is Election Day. Union County voters will join Americans throughout the country in deciding the outcome of very important elections, from The White House to the courthouse.

The nation's next president will be elected on Tuesday, with the incumbent facing a tough challenge.

Raleigh Deleen Peeler

Graveside funeral services for Raleigh Deleen Peeler, 83, of Bonham, Texas, were 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012 at the Arledge Ridge Cemetery.

The Rev. Normous Free officiated. Military honors were accorded by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.  

Mr. Peeler died Friday Nov. 16, 2012, at the Seven Oaks Care Center in Bonham, Texas.

Mr. Peeler was born on May 30, 1929, in Dongola, the son of Raleigh Hugh and Marie Smoot Peeler.  

Mr. Peeler served in the U.S. Navy, receiving his honorable discharge on May 5, 1948.

Cobden wins regional volleyball championship

The host Cobden High School girls’ volleyball team defeated top-seeded Shawnee 25-22 and 25-18 to win its first Class 1A regional title Thursday, Oct. 25.

Shawnee led 16-12 in the opening game before Cobden came back to take a 19-18 lead behind two aces by Taylor Tomazzoli.

The game was tied 22-22 when Carley Washer scored from the middle to put the Appleknockers ahead.
