To residents of Union County and the surrounding area, for many years our nation's government, corporations and other organizations tell us what they want us to know and hear.

Those that do or try or tell us what's really going on are slandered, threatened, mocked, etc. As will I for voicing my and many other peoples opinions.

Sgt. Joshua A. Born

Sgt. Joshua A. Born, 25, of Niceville, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, while serving his country in Afghanistan.

He was born on Dec. 4, 1986, at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

He married Megan Myrick on June 6, 2010.

He was a member of the 549th Military Police Company stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga.

‘Pieces of PAST’ Quilt, Table Show celebrates 10th anniversary

The PAST organization will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its “Pieces of the PAST” Quilts and Tables Show on Saturday, April 14.  

The theme this year is “Through the Seasons: A Glimpse of the PAST.”

As a part of the luncheon program, a quilt turning will feature a “glimpse” of selected exhibits from each of the past 10 years’ events. Guests can expect to hear a decade of stories to accompany the quilts from that “season.”

No injuries in Anna fire

Fire caused major damage to an Anna residence early Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported.

The fire was reported at 2:16 a.m. Tuesday at a house at 119 George St.

The Anna and Jonesboro fire departments responded to the call. Firefighters were at the scene until about 4 a.m.

The owner of the house was identified as Bret Crunk.

One person who was in the house at the time got out safely.

The cause of the fire  remained uncertain. The fire appeared to have started in an addition at the back of the one-story frame house.

Tourism update focus of meetings in Anna, Metropolis

Representatives of the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Shawnee Community College and the Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau attended last week's Governor's Conference on Tourism in Rosemont.

The two organizations are teaming together to host two luncheons to provide updates to all tourism-related businesses in the area.

The meetings are scheduled at noon so that those who are attending can get a quick update during their lunch hour and then return to their regular work day.

Proposed school reorganization defeated

A proposed reorganization involving four Union County school districts was defeated in Tuesday's primary election.

The proposed reorganization involved Lick Creek School District 16, Anna School District 37, Jonesboro School District 43 and Anna-Jonesboro Community High School District 81.

Unofficial results tallied at the Union County clerk's office in Jonesboro showed that the proposal lost by a margin of 2,522-624.
