Cobden earns OT win, Shawnee falls at tourney

Cobden fell behind in the first quarter but fought back to post a 42-39 overtime win against Marissa-Coulterville at the Sesser-Valier holiday high school boys’ basketball tournament Friday, Dec. 28.

The Meteors led 10-4 after the first quarter, but the Appleknockers came back to take a 19-16 lead at halftime. Cobden led 26-22 heading into the fourth quarter.

The game was tied 35-35 at the end of regulation. Cobden outscored Marissa-Coulterville 7-4 in overtime.

Terry Lynn English

<strong>Mr. Terry Lynn English, age 64 of San Diego, California, formerly of Anna, passed away peacefully from a very short battle with cancer on December 21, 2012. He was born in Anna, the son of Clark and Bettye Cash English. Terry called many places home but his heart was left in just a few; Anna, San Diego, Colorado and Wisconsin.</strong>

Junior Wildcat wrestlers compete in tournaments

The Junior Wildcat wrestlers competed in several holiday wrestling tournaments during December.

“We’re always glad to see wrestlers and parents willing to go on the road for the team during the busy Christmas season,” said club president Rollie Hawk.

“We’ll have a lot of local tournaments in the coming weeks and there’s no better preparation than keeping that body moving and continuing to improve skills during the holidays.”

A-J wrestling looks to have bright future

No would would argue that the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School wrestling team is small in numbers this season.

Hats off to the grapplers who have remained with the program and stuck it out.

This is not to put any fault for the dismal turnout because of the efforts of first-year Wildcat wrestling coach Eric Massey, who brings a lot to the wrestling table.

A former A-J grappler himself, Massey has been involved in the A-J Junior Wildcat Wrestling Club.

Benton 43, A-J 26

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School girls’ basketball team lost its opening-round game to host Benton at the Lady Rangerette Christmas Classic Wednesday, Dec. 27.

Benton 43, A-J 26: The Lady Rangerettes built a 14-8 first quarter lead on the way to their win.

Kim Mixen scored 9 points to lead the Lady Wildcats. Brooke Chamness and Balyie Denny each scored 5 points, Cara Farris 4 and Katie Grant 3.

Benton led 24-12 at halftime and 34-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

A-J defeats Eldorado in holiday tournament action

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team split in action last week at the Eldorado Holiday Tournament.

Gallatin County 70, A-J 36: The Hawks’ 6-foot-11-inch Andrew Drone scored 25 points and had 15 rebounds to lead his squad over the Wildcats Saturday, Dec. 29.

Tyler Vaughn led A-J with 12 points and 2 rebounds. Damian Reed and Ben McFarland each had 9 points and 2 rebounds.

Zach Parr had 4 points and 5 rebounds. Noah Fuller had 2 points and 3 rebounds. Jay Kemp added a rebound.

A-J boys bowling team doing well

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ bowling team has built a 6-1 record this season.

“Nick Ward is leading the team with high average,” A-J bowling coach Craig Dillman said.

“Evan Hughey has had the high game so far this season and Chris Hill has been one of our most consistent bowlers and has been a key in our wins.”

Dillman said freshman Dale Prater is contributing as well and he looks forward to him improving in the future.

College offers reading program

Shawnee Community College is offering a free reading program.

The program is designed to serve those who have limited reading, math, writing and English language skills below the 9th grade level.

Assistance is available in five area counties to those who are 16 years of age and older.

Dorothy LaVerne Vernon

<strong>         Mrs. Dorothy LaVerne Vernon, age 85 of Anna, formerly of Jonesboro, died at 3:34 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was born January 3, 1928 in Pocahontas, Missouri, the daughter of Reginald Otto and Alma Rosalia Schoen Swan. She married George William Vernon on November 6, 1948 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 7, 2005.</strong>

Robert L. Stout
