Anna Arts center grateful for support

The Shawnee Hills Arts Council that sponsors the Anna Arts Center extends appreciation to the community for a successful 2012, especially to:

The Gazette-Democrat, Geof Skinner, The Front Street Journal, The Southern Illinoisan, WIBH, the PAST organization, Martha Ann Webb, Anna-Jonesboro Community High School Band Boosters, TD Photography, St. Mary’s Church,  Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church, First Evangelical Presbyterian Church, participating businesses, volunteers and individuals who attended events at the arts center during 2012.

Dongola girls defeat Egyptian

Victoria Shirkey scored 13 points to lead Dongola  to a 42-33 win over host Egyptian in South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball action Thursday, Jan. 3.

Brittany Hinkle addded 8 points for the Lady Demons. Stephanie Shepard, Breanna Newman and Reba Robinson each scored 7 points.

Dongola led 10-6 after the first quarter and 22-16 at halftime. The Lady Demons led 30-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

Century 52, Dongola 26: The visiting Lady Centurions pulled ahead early in the win Monday, Jan. 7.

Your support is appreciated

As the result of a recent subscription promotion, The Gazette-Democrat welcomed more than 150 new subscribers during December, along with hundreds of renewals. This represents a tremendous increase in view of the newspaper's current saturation of the community.

While stories abound that the end is near for newspapers, it is obvious that Union County readers continue to enjoy their weekly newspaper.

WIBH sponsors successful New Coats, New Hope campaign

WIBH Radio Station in Anna recently sponsored its annual New Coats, New Hope campaign to provide coats for kids in Southern Illinois.   

In 2011, in response to the growing number of abused and neglected children in the area, WIBH saw a need that had to be filled.  

"Children of abuse and neglect often go without warm clothing in the winter," WIBH sales and promotion manager Shawnna Rhine said.

"This not only affects them physically, but emotionally as well and we just couldn't ignore that."

<strong>Ms. Diane Kay Kelley, age 63 of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, died at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at her home in Cape Girardeau. She was born October 27, 1949 in Cape Girardeau, MO, the daughter of Dempsey and Thelma Garrison Harvel.</strong>

Dongola posts 73-63 victory over Shawnee

Dongola spoiled host Shawnee’s homecoming with a 73-63 win in high school boys’ South Egyptian Conference basketball Saturday, Jan. 19, at Wolf Lake.

Brock Patterson scored 20 points to lead the Demons. Kyle Cox added 14 points, Alex Zeschke 12, Tyler Eddleman 10, Bradley Ralls and Darius Schaure 8 each and Dylan Simmerman 1.

Austin Treece had 16 points to lead the Redskins. Gavyn Ellet added 12 points, Michael Crane 8, Brandon Pind 7, Brady Reynolds and Daniel Parris 6 each, Ryan Ochoa 4 and Dylan Boston and Nick Crane 2 each.  

Anna man sentenced for escape

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported on Dec. 21 that Mark C. Cole, 39, of 313 Church St. in Anna had been sentencted to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for escape, which is a Class 2 felony.

Cole was charged with escape after he briefly ran from Union County Sheriff’s Office deputies in October 2012.

Cole was in custody at the time and fled on foot while he was being transported from an appearance in court.

Cole also was sentenced to a concurrent terem of six years for retail theft, a Class 4 felony.

Dongola win two games at tournament

Host Dongola won two games at its own holiday tournament in high school boys basketball last week.

Dongola 70, Joppa 41: Brock Patterson, Tyler Eddleman and Darius Schaure each scored 15 points to lead the Demons in their opening game Thursday, Dec. 27.

Alex Zeschke added 9 points for Dongola and Bradley Ralls 7. Donnie Gibson 4, Dylan Simmerman 3 and Zayne Dismore 2.

The Demons led 12-5 after one quarter and 24-15 at halftime.

A-J Elks host Hoop Shoot event

The A-J Elks Hoop Shoot was held at the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School gymnasium Saturday, Dec. 8.

Following are the first, second and third place winners in each age group:

8-9 year old girls: Alexis Miller, first; Abigail Remsey, second and Meygan Brockett, third.

8-9 year old boys: Dylan Ralls, first; Ethan Carren, second and Cooper Flamm, third.

10-11 year old girls: Mikayla Brundren, first; Autumn McMahan, second and Brylee Oxford, third.
