Shawnee College plans community forums

Shawnee Community College is planning to host a series of community forums starting Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Forums are scheduled in Vienna, Cairo, Metropolis, Anna and on the college's main campus near Ullin.

The Anna forum is set for Thursday, Feb. 7, at Stinson Memorial Library.

Each of the forums is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Community members are invited to attend one of the forums to share their ideas about the future of the college.

Shawnee girls outscore Dongola

Reagan Brown scored 16 points to lead Shawnee to a 58-35 homecoming win over visiting Dongola in high school girls’ basketball Saturday, Jan. 19.  

Taylor Loveless added 13 points for the Lady Reds, Jordan Johnson and Gwen Kuehne had 12 each, Morgan Stevens and Alexis Charles 2 each and Amanda Goodman 1.

Kyeli Flores scored 12 points to lead the Lady Demons. Brenna Newman added 9 points, Reba Robinson and Cali Mowery 4 each and Victoria Shirkey, Stephanie Shepard and Cassondra Gorst 2 each.

Ruth C. Wickman

Ruth C. Wickman, 84, of Cape Girardeau, MO, passed away Thursday, January 3,

2013 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born June 21, 1928 in Chicago, IL to Elmer  and Barrett Caroline

Petersen Osher.

Ruth and Robert G.  Wickman were married June 2, 1951 at Oak Park, Illinois.

She was a member of  St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include :

Husband - Robert G. Wickman, Cape Girardeau, MO

Daughter - Cheryl Southern, Chicago, IL

More than 40 arrests, warnings during detail

More than 40 arrests and warnings were reported during a roadside safety check conducted by Illinois State Police District 22 in December in Union County.

State police conducted the roadside safety check during the late evening hours of Friday, Dec. 21, and the early morning hours of Saturday, Dec. 22.

The detail was conducted at the intersection of U.S. Route 51 and Wing Hill Road.

State police reported that two persons were arrested for driving under the influence.

Eight other alcohol and drug arrests were reported during the detail.

Pope County wins Dongola tourney title

Pope County topped host Dongola 54-48 to win the first Dongola Christmas Tournament in high school boys’ basketball Friday, Dec. 28.

The Demons built a 16-6 first quarter lead and led 23-21 at halftime.

The Pirates outscored Dongola 14-8 in the third quarter to take a 35-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Alex Zeschke scored 14 points to lead the Demons. Tyler Eddleman and Brock Patterson each added 9 points, Bradley Ralls 8, Darius Schauer 5 and Caleb Theis 3.

16 inches of snow measured in area

A blizzard, another winter storm, freezing fog, sleet and rain highlighted Union County's weather during the final days of December and 2012.

In Anna, 16 inches of snow was measured last week.

A blizzard which began during the night on Christmas Day dumped 11 inches of snow on the area.

A winter storm which began last Friday night left behind another 5 inches of snow.

The snow was accompanied by frigid temperatures. The low dipped to 5 degrees Sunday morning in Anna.

A-J falls to Carterville, posts win over Century

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team posted a 1-1 record in games played last week.

Carterville 49, A-J 42: The host Wildcats fell behind early in a Southern Illinois River-to-River Misssippi Division Conference loss Friday, Jan. 11.

The Lions led 12-6 after the first quarter and 20-15 at halftime. The Wildcats fought back to take a 31-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Social host law takes effect in Illinois

When the clock struck midnight to start the New Year, the important role adults play in keeping alcohol out of the hands of our children was further defined in Illinois, when new sanctions took effect on those who allow underage drinking in their home.

The new legislation closes a loophole of legal accountability on those who knowingly allow alcohol consumption by minors.

Hunting violations addressed in recent court dispositions

January dispositions reported by the Union County state's attorney's office in Jonesboro included six cases which involved hunting violations.

Disposition of all of the cases occurred on Jan. 10.

A Poplar Bluff, Mo., resident was cited for three violations: falsification of residency to obtain a resident archery deer permit, falsification of residency to obtain a resident hunting license and unlawful hunting of white-tailed deer without the  consent of the landowner.
