Five file for 2014 primary

Filing for the March 2014 primary election in Union County ended Monday.

Petitions werre filed at the Union County clerk's office in Jonesboro.

Five candidates filed nominating petitions for county offices.

Those who filed petitions were:

William Gibson, Dongola, Republican, for Union County sheriff.

Scott Harvel, Jonesboro, Democrat, for Union County sheriff.

Terry Bartruff, Anna, Democrat, for Union County clerk.

Bobby Toler Jr., Jonesboro, Democrat, for Union County commissioner.

David Lee Winn

David Lee Winn, 74, of Goreville, and formerly of Union County, died at 12:40 a.m., Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at his home in Goreville.

He was born on Jan. 10, 1939, in Anna, the son of Earl and Thelma Arnold Winn.

He married Glenda Reynolds in 1987 in Bardwell, Ky.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda Reynolds of Goreville; one son, David (Tiffany) Winn of Anna; one daughter, Nina (Todd) Lasley of Anna; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Kay Jordan of Tamms; other relatives and many friends.

Carol Jean Wiseman

<strong>Mrs. Carol Jean Wiseman, age 75 of Cobden, died at 5:40 pm, Tuesday December 10, 2013 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.  She was born on December 10, 1938 in Pontiac, Michigan, the daughter of Arthur and Oneida (Hundley) Porter.  Carol married Roger A. Wiseman on May 8, 1972 in Murphysboro.</strong>

Betty Plott

Betty Plott, 86, of Anna, died at 10:13 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at her residence.

She was born on Oct. 18, 1927, in Wolf Lake, the daughter of Fred and Stella Wilson Groves.

She married Ray Plott. He preceded her in death in 1996.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Anna for over 70 years, where she was very active in many services. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Eastern Star.

Anna Police report arrests

The Anna Police Department reports that four persons were cited in connection with two separate incidents which occurred early this week.

A Benton man was apprehended by the police department in connection with the alleged burglary of a car at a trailer park on Williams Street. The incident happened at about 10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1.

Three persons were cited in connection with an alleged incident which happened at about 5:21 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2.

The incident happened in an alley in the 100 block of East Vienna St.

Dimples C. Swoboda

Dimples C. Swoboda, 93, of Cairo, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at her residence.

She was born on Nov. 28, 1920, in Sikeston, Mo., the daughter of Lawson and Mabel Patterson.

She married Gilbert Roy "Rags" Swoboda on Nov. 18, 1941. They were married for 72 years.

She was a member of the Cairo Baptist Church.

Alto Vineyards celebrates 25th anniversary

A landmark event in the history of a Union County business was celebrated last Saturday evening when Alto Vineyards in Alto Pass hosted a 25th anniversary celebration.

Alto Vineyards celebrated three generations of winemaking and thanking its many loyal supporters. Local musicians Carter and Connelley performed during the celebration.

Alto Vineyards owner Paul Renzaglia was on hand to welcome the many people who came out on a cold December evening to offer their congratulations and wishes for future success.

Herman Dean Chapman

Herman Dean Chapman, 66, of Vienna, died Saturday, Nov. 30, at 11:34 p.m. at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

He was born on Dec. 29, 1946, in Union County, the son of Herschel Wilber "Blackie" Chapman and Eva Lee Andrews Chapman.

He married Sharon Brumley in 1985 in Union County. She survives.

Wildcats number six seed at Eldorado tournament

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys' basketball team will be the sixth seed at  the 49th annual Eldorado Holiday Tournament, which is scheduled Dec. 26-28.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play host Eldorado at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26.

Meridian is the top seed in the tournament. The other seeded teams follow in order: (2) Harrisburg, (3) Massac County, (4) Fairfield, (5) Union County, Ky., (7) Carmi-White County and (8) West Frankfort.

County Board reorganizes

The Union County Board of Commissioners reorganized and elected officers at its regular meeting last Friday morning.

The meeting was at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Don Denny was reelected as board chairman. Richard Cunningham was reelected as vice chairman.

The board chairman also made appointments to various committees:

Finance: Don Denny, Max Miller, Dale Russell.

Facilities and transportation: Richard Cunningham, Don Denny.

Administrative and personnel: Danny Hartline, Richard Cunningham.
