Expanded services available to crime victims in Union County

A significant expansion of services which are available to victims of crimes has been reported by Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds.

Edmonds said Oct. 17 that the Victim’s Advocate Unit, VAU, of the Union County state’s attorney’s office will now be available 24 hours, seven days a week to assist victims of violent crime when such services are requested by local law enforcement personnel.

George Alan "Al" Koehn

George Alan "Al" Koehn, 74, died on Oct. 13, 2013.

He was born on May 13, 1939, in Paducah, Ky., the son of Byron and Imogene Koehn (Anna, Ill.).

He held music education degrees from Murray State, Southern Illinois and Michigan State universities; taught high school and college choir for 11 years, and performed nationally for nine years as a singer/keyboardist before starting his private voice and professional music performance company in St. Petersburg, Fla.

County receives $200,000 juvenile justice grant

Union County has received a $200,000 juvenile justice grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services to establish a Redeploy Illinois program site.  

Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced the awarding of the funds in an Oct. 17 news release.

Edmonds said the grant funds will be used to provide services to young people between the ages of 13 and 18 in Union, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Pope and Saline counties who are at high risk of commitment to the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice.  

A-J/Cobden soccer edged in regional championship

The Anna-Jonesboro/Cobden co-op Wildcats boys’ soccer team lost Friday night in the IHSA playoffs to Waterloo Gibault 3-2.  

The teams met at Columbia for the regional championship.  

The loss was only the second of the season for the ‘Cats. The defeat ended the ‘Cats hope of a run to the state finals.

“It was a heartbreaking loss for us,” coach Mark Boomer said. The ‘Cats had a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes to go before a couple of late shots gave the Hawks the win.

A-J boys’ soccer to play for regional championship

For only the second time in the history of the boys’ soccer program, the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats will play for a regional championship.  

Tuesday night, the Wildcats opened the IHSA playoffs with a 2-0 win over Massac County in the Waterloo Gibault regional.

“It was a hard-fought game,” A-J head coach Mark Boomer said.

“We opened the game on our heels a bit and never really got anything going the first half. We were not connecting on our passes and we were not finishing our shots.

Supporters step up to fund wrestling program at A-J

At a regular meeting of the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School District No. 81 Board of Education, the high school wrestling team received two checks that will serve as the team’s primary funds for the 2013-2014 season.  

Rollie Hawk presented a check for $500 from the A-J Junior Wildcats Wrestling Club and Grover Mays presented a check for $5,000 from Grover Mays Construction.

“I don’t envy the school board in the budgetary decisions they have to make each year,” said A-J Junior Wildcats club president Rollie Hawk before presenting his club’s check.

Patrick Glenn Harward

Mr. Patrick Glenn Harward, age 78 of Cobden, formally of Chicago, IL, died at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2013 in the V.A. Community Living Center in Marion. He was born January 14, 1935 to Richard and Dorothy Siebold Harward. He married Sharon A. Brothers on October 1, 1977.

Southend StumpJumpers present annual variety show Saturday night

The Southend Stump-Jumpers presented their 16th annual ColorFest variety show last Saturday night.

The show was staged in the auditorium at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

The theme for the 2013 show was "M*A*S*H."

Saturday night's show featured an appearance by Southern Illinois singer Danny Norman, who performed "I am an American."

The program presented at the show follows:

American Trilogy: John Nimmo.

Pledge of Allegiance: Girl Scout Troops, Numbers 8552 and 8553.

Anna Arts Center planning wide range of events in coming weeks

The Anna Arts Center in Anna has a busy schedule of events on the calendar in coming weeks.

Fire Station Haunted  House of Horrors

The Fire Station Haunted House of Horrors is open every Friday and Saturday in October and on Halloween night from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Anna Arts Center at 125 W. Davie St. in Anna.   

Admission is $5 per person or groups of six for $20. All proceeds will be split between the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School Theater Boosters and the Anna Arts Center for their programs.

New Writing Program Planned

Car show, Oktoberfest scheduled in Cobden this weekend

The Village of Cobden is planning to host a car show, an Oktoberfest event, a community-wide yard sale and other activities on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The car show and Oktoberfest will be held in the park in downtown Cobden. Proceeds from the events will go to charitable and community projects.

Southern Counties Autos Unlimited plans to sponsor a nonjudged car show which will feature a variety of models.
